CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State shot 53-percent from the field, committed a season-low eight turnovers and had two 20-point scorers in the same game for the first time this season as the Vikings outscored Milwaukee by 21 points in the second half to earn an 88-67 win on Sunday afternoon in the Wolstein Center.
CSU is now 13-15 overall and 5-9 in the Horizon League, one-and-a-half games behind sixth place UIC (6-7). Milwaukee slipped to 6-22 overall and 2-12 in the league.
Freshman Bryn Forbes tied his career-high with 24 points, hitting 9-of-12 from the field for his fourth 20-point game of the season. Charlie Lee added 20 points and six assists, upping his season total to 139 assists, the most in a single-season by a CSU sophomore. Lee also had zero turnovers in 37 minutes.
Junior Lomomba finished with 11 points, five assists and four rebounds off the bench, while Marlin Mason chipped in nine points and eight rebounds off the bench. Devon Long scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds.
The Vikings made 32-of-61 (.525) from the field, including 12-of-25 (.480) from three-point. They also held a 36-23 advantage on the boards and scored 22 second chance points, thanks to 13 offensive rebounds.
With the game tied at 37-37 at the half, the Vikings took control of the contest over the first 12 minutes of the second half, outscoring the Panthers 36-12 to take a 22-point lead (73-51) with just under eight minutes to play.
CSU did it from everywhere during the run, getting six points early in the paint from Long, then hitting five three-pointers. Lomomba and Mason also had back-to-back dunks, the later an alley-oop from Lee.
The lead would swell to as many as 27 points late in the game.
Devon Long got the scoring started with a short jumper in the lane 30 seconds in, but the Panthers would storm to their largest lead of the half (17-9) on back-to-back three-pointers from Austin Arians and Jordan Aaron. But the Vikings came right back, using a 14-5 run to gain a 23-22 advantage on two Forbes free throws.
The teams continued to trade baskets until Forbes sparked a 12-3 run with 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers and two strong drives to the basket for layups, the final one giving the Vikings their largest lead of the half (37-30) with just over two minutes left in the half.
However, the Panthers scored the final seven points of the half, including an Aaron jumper from the left wing just before the final buzzer as the teams went into half tied 37-37.
Aaron led the Panthers with 18 points, while Austin Arians had 15 off the bench.
Milwaukee shot .511 (23-45) from the field.
CSU concludes its regular season home slate when the Vikings host Wright State on Wednesday (Feb. 20) at 7:00 p.m. in the Wolstein Center. It will be Senior Day with the lone senior on the roster, Tim Kamczyc, being honored in a pre-game ceremony.
