CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bryn Forbes scored a career-high 21 points and tied a CSU single-game freshman record with five three-pointers as Cleveland State led wire-to-wire in a 74-62 win over Detroit on Saturday afternoon in the Wolstein Center.
The Vikings improved to 10-8 overall and 2-2 in league play, while the Titans fell to 11-6 overall and lost for the first time in the Horizon League (3-1).
Forbes, whose previous career-high was 18 points at Ball State earlier this season, hit 6-of-12 from the field and 5-of-7 from three-point and registered a career-best eight rebounds. Tim Kamczyc scored 15 points, while Sebastian Douglas tallied 11 points. Devon Long added eight points and four rebounds and Marlin Mason chipped in nine points and five rebounds.
The Vikings shot .519 (28-54) from the field and held the Titans to a 23-of-54 (.426) effort, holding the Titans almost 18 points below their season scoring average.
The first half belonged to Forbes who scored 19 points to give CSU a 43-35 lead at the intermission. The 43 points tied CSU's best offensive output of the first half this season. The Vikings also scored 43 in the season opening win over Grambling.
Forbes hit his first four three-point attempts, finishing 5-of-6 in the first 20 minutes.
CSU jumped out to an 18-8 lead six minutes in and would not trail the entire half. The Titans did claw back within two (22-20) with 10:13 to play and after the teams traded baskets, Forbes hit a three-pointer and Kamczyc followed with a jumper to extend the lead back to nine points (36-27) with 5:49 left in the half.
Detroit got back within five (40-35), but Forbes' fifth three-pointer of the half with nine seconds left allowed the Vikings to take their fifth lead of the season into the locker room.
CSU shot .571 (16-28) in the first half.
Detroit was able to get back within six points on numerous occasions early in the second half, but an 11-3 CSU run over a seven minute stretch gave the Vikings a 14-point lead (58-44) with 10:27 to play on back-to-back baskets by Mason.
Detroit would not threaten the rest of the game.
The Titans hurt themselves at the free throw line, missing 19 of their 32 attempts. CSU was 10-of-16 and also held a 39-34 advantage on the boards.
Both teams made 15 turnovers.
CSU is back in action on Thursday (Jan. 17) when the Vikings play at Milwaukee at 8:00 p.m. EST.
Postgame Notes
• Detroit still leads the overall series with Cleveland State, 37-16. CSU improved to 14-11 at home.
• CSU, who improved to 7-1 at home this year, handed Detroit its first Horizon League loss of the season.
• The Vikings used the same starting five for the third straight game (Lee, Forbes, Douglas, Kamczyc, Long). It was the first time CSU had the same starting lineup for three straight games since the first three contests of the season (Lee, Douglas, Mason, Kamczyc, Grady).
• CSU's 43 first half points tied the season-high for most points scored in the first 20 minutes. The Vikings also scored 43 first half points in the season opening win over Grambling.
• Bryn Forbes scored a career-high 21 points. Forbes, who scored 19 points in the first half, went 6-of-12 from the field and 5-of-7 from three-point.
• Forbes' five three-pointers tied the CSU single-game record by a freshman. He was the 12th player to sccomplish the feat.
• Forbes reached double figures for the ninth straight game and 11th time in the last 12 contests.
• Charlie Lee dished out nine assists, one shy of tying his career-high.
• The Vikings improved to 17-4 in doubleheaders with the CSU women's team over the last five years. The women's team, which beat Detroit in today's first game, is also 17-4 in twinbills over the last five years.
• CSU is back in action on Thursday (Jan. 17) when the Vikings play at Milwaukee at 8:00 p.m. EST.
