Vikings Use 19-0 Second Half Run to Top Detroit Mercy, 90-73

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State used a 19-0 run early in the second half to run away from Detroit Mercy and claim a 90-73 victory at the Wolstein Center on Thursday night.

The 90 points were a season high for the Vikings.

The Vikings improved to 7-16 overall and 3-8 in the Horizon League, while the Titans fell to 5-18 overall (3-8 HL).

STAT LEADERS

  • Rob Edwards scored 24 points, hitting 6-of-13 from the field and 8-of-10 at the free throw line. He also knocked down four three-pointers and added four rebounds and two assists.
  • Kasheem Thomas posted 15 points (5-8 FG) with seven assists and two steals. It was the sixth time he has dished out at least six assists in a game.
  • Bobby Word scored 17 points, hitting four three-pointers. It was the fourth straight game that Word has hit four three's.
  • Demonte Flannigan just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds before fouling out.
  • Anthony Wright tallied 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. He hit 5-of-6 from the field.
  • Derek Sloan finished with six points and four rebounds, while Kenny Carpenter scored six points with five rebounds and two assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A three-pointer by Thomas gave the Vikings an early 9-5 lead four minutes into the contest.
  • Detroit Mercy answered with seven straight points to take a 12-9 lead at the 13:22 mark.
  • The game was back and forth over the next 10 minutes until the Titans used an 11-2 run over two minutes to turn a one point deficit (26-25) into a 36-28 lead with 2:55 left in the first half.
  • The Titans held a 40-33 lead at halftime.
  • Corey Allen gave the Titans a 10 point lead (43-33) with a three-pointer early in the second half.
  • However, the Vikings scored the next 19 points – hitting eight straight shots from the field – to take a 52-43 lead with five minutes gone in the second half.
  • The CSU lead reached as many as 18 points (62-47) with 10:27 left on a three-pointer from Edwards and the Vikings led by double figures the rest of the way.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The Vikings were playing at home for the first time in three weeks. CSU's last home game was Jan. 14 against Valparaiso.
  • CSU shot .500 (32-64) for the game, including 19-of-31 (.613) in the second half.
  • The Vikings hit 11-of-29 from three-point and committed just 10 turnovers
  • CSU forced 16 Viking turnovers and turned them into 24 points.
  • The Vikings dished out a season-high 17 assists.
  • Detroit Mercy held a 36-33 advantage on the glass.
