CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's basketball team has been selected to play in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament for the second straight year and will open play with a first round game at Western Michigan on Wednesday (March 18) at 7:00 p.m.
This is the sixth time in the last eight seasons that CSU has played in the postseason. Last year, the Vikings fell at Ohio, 64-62, in the opening round of the CIT.
The Vikings will enter the postseason with an 18-14 overall record and finished Horizon League play with an 11-5 record. CSU fell in the league semifinals at top-seeded and eventual tournament champion Valparaiso.
WMU is 20-13 overall this year and went 10-8 in the Mid-American Conference. The Broncos lost to Akron in the second round of the MAC Tournament.
This will be the fifth all-time meeting between the two schools with WMU holding a 3-1 advantage in the series.
The teams have not played since WMU defeated CSU, 68-59, on Jan. 3, 1974.
The CIT includes 32 of the top mid-major teams in the nation and will feature five rounds of play over the next three weeks. The second round of the CIT will be played March 20-21, followed by the quarterfinals on March 24-25. The March 31 semifinals and April 2 championship game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
The CIT uses the old NIT model in which there is no set bracket. Future round opponents are determined by the results of the previous round.
