75th Anniversary Countdown

In the months leading up the the first men's basketball practice, the Cleveland State Univeristy Athletic Department held a special countdown to the beginning of the 75th season of men's basketball at CSU and Fenn College. The celebration officially kicked off with the first practice of the year on Friday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m. Read below to learn more about the exciting history of the men's basketball program.
1 In 1985-86, the Vikings were ranked No. 1 in the nation in both scoring margin (19.3) and steals (13.2).
  The late John McLendon is the lone member of the Cleveland State basketball family in the National Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.
  In 1987-88, Ken McFadden became the only Viking to be named conference player of the year.
2 Two Viking head coaches have been named conference coach of the year. Kevin Mackey earned the honor in the AMCU in both 1985 & 1986 and Mike Boyd was the Mid-Continent honoree in 1993.
  Two Viking head coaches have won their 500th career victory while at CSU. John McLendon won his with a 24-22 win over Walsh on Jan. 11, 1967. Rollie Massimino picked his up in an 82-64 victory against Duquesne on Dec. 27, 2001.
  CSU has made two appearances in the NIT. The Vikes reached the second round in both 1986-87 and 1987-88.
3 CSU set a school record with three straight 100-point games in 1985-86. The Vikings opened the year with a 105-65 win over Clarion and followed that up with wins over Central Connecticut State (118-66) and Youngstown State (101-69).
  Three former Vikings have played in the NBA. Franklin Edwards played with three teams from 1981-90. Clinton Smith played with Golden State in 1986-87 and Washington in 1990-91. Darren Tillis played with three teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1982, from 1982-84.
  CSU has won three regular-season conference titles, accomplishing it in 1984-85, 1985-86 and 1991-92.
4 Ken McFadden (1985-89) is CSU's only four-time All-American.
  Kenny Robertson led the nation with 4.0 steals per game in 1988-89 to become the only Viking to lead the NCAA in a statistical category. Four players have scored 40 or more points in a game. Franklin Edwards holds the record with 49 at Xavier on Feb. 25, 1981. Damon Stringer had 47 at UW-Milwaukee on Jan. 29, 2000. Ken McFadden (vs. Illinois-Chicago on Jan. 31, 1987) and Dave Jacklitch (vs. Hiram on March 3, 1951) both tallied 41 points.
5 Cleveland State has recorded five 20-win seasons. The Vikes were 21-8 in 1984-85, a school-best 29-4 in 1985-86, 25-8 in 1986-87, 22-8 in 1987-88 and 22-6 in 1991-92.
  Five Vikings averaged 10 points per game in 1981-82, the only season in which that has occurred. Darren Tillis led the Vikes with a 17.3 scoring average. Dave Youdath tossed in 13.0 ppg while Dave Colbert, Lee Reed and Mike Sweeney all averaged 10.5 ppg.
  CSU committed a school low of five turnovers vs. Brooklyn on Dec. 30, 82 and also against Utica on, Jan. 5, 1985.
  CSU set a school record by scoring 90 or more points in five straight games from Nov. 25-Dec, 7, 1985.
  Five CSU players have started 50 games and have come off the bench 50 times in their Viking careers. Teammates from 1983-87, Eddie Bryant (66 starts & 59 games as a reserve) & Shawn Hood (59/55) were the first two to turn the trick. Desmond Porter (55/52) accomplished it from 1987-91 while Jamaal Harris (61-55) did it from 1998-2002 and Tahric Gosley (65/55) from 1999-2003.
6 Fenn College allowed a school record low six points in its, 29-6, win over Y Commerce during the inaugural season of 1929-30.
  Dave Kyle set a CSU season record with six 30-point games in 1975-76. Franklin Edwards later tied the mark in 1979-80.
  Six Vikings have been chosen in the NBA Draft.
7 Gale Drummer set a CSU record with seven blocked shots versus Wichita State on Dec. 29, 1972. Brian Parker tied the mark against Slippery Rock on Nov. 26, 88 while Pape Badiane was the latest to tie the standard with seven versus Butler on Feb. 24, 2003.
  Ken McFadden averaged a school record 7.0 assists per game in 1988-89.
  Led by Ken McFadden's 41, CSU players have scored 30 or more points against Illinois-Chicago on seven occasions, the most 30-point games against any opponent.
  Mike Sweeney set a Viking freshman record with seven steals versus Niagara on Jan. 6, 1979.
8 A CSU record eight players scored in double-figures in the 121-83 pasting of Northern Iowa on Feb. 18, 1989. Ken McFadden led the onslaught with 26 points. He was joined by Kenny Robertson (16), Brian Parker 15), William Stanley (15), Steve Malloy (14), Warren Bradley (12), Desmond Porter (11) and Steve Givens (10).
  Franklin Edwards became the quickest Viking to reach 200 points in a season when he needed just eight games to top the mark.
  CSU has won eight of the 14 multiple overtime games it has played.
9 Percell Coles scorched Duquesne for a CSU record nine three-pointers on Feb. 27, 2002.
  Nine Viking players have played 1,000 minutes in a season.
  CSU won a school record nine straight road conference games from Feb., 15 1992 to Feb. 22, 1993.
  The CSU record for consecutive home victories versus an opponent is nine. The Vikings topped Akron at home nine straight times from 1978-91. They also defeated Valparaiso in nine straight home contests from 1985-93.
  Nine Vikings have scored 500 points in a season.
10 Ken McFadden's number 10 was the second CSU number to be retired.
  CSU has had ten players earn All-America honors.
  Ten Vikings made a three-pointer in 2004-05 setting a school record. CSU also had ten players score 100 or more points on the season tying the 1985-86 squad for most players with 100 or more points.
  CSU won a school record ten games on the road in both 1992-93 and 1986-87.
11 The Vikings surpassed the century mark a school record eleven times during the 1985-86 campaign.
  CSU defeated Western Illinois in eleven straight games from 1985-91 to set a school record for consecutive wins over an opponent.
  Franklin Edwards holds the school record for consecutive 20-point games with 11 from Jan. 23 to Feb. 23, 1980.
  The Vikings have won 11 times at Akron, Illinois-Chicago and Youngstown State, the most road wins at an opponent in school history.
12 Kenny Robertson set a CSU single-game record with 12 steals versus Wagner on Dec. 3, 1988.
  CSU blocked a school record 12 shots versus Central State on Nov. 22, 2003.
  The Vikings drained a school record-tying 12 three-pointers against Norfolk State on Nov. 27, 2004. They had previously nailed a dozen 3-pointers versus Drake (12/30/03) and against Northern Illinois (1/6/92).
  Brian Parker set the school record for field goal percentage in a game, going 12-for-12 against Eastern Illinois on Jan. 30, 1989. It was the most consecutive field goals made in school history.
  The Vikings set a school record with twelve straight home conference wins from Jan. 26, 1985 to Jan. 24, 1987.
13 Mike Garland is the 13th head coach in school history.
  Homer E. Woodling, the first coach in school history, coached for 13 seasons from 1929-41 and 1952-53.
  Franklin Edwards holds the CSU career mark with thirteen 30-point games.
  Thirteen Vikings have dished out 100 assists in a season.
14 Franklin Edwards' number 14 was the first to be retired by CSU.
  The Vikings won a school record 14 straight games from Jan. 27, 1986 to March 18, 1986. CSU later tied the mark with 14 consecutive victories from Jan. 16, 1993 to Feb. 24, 1993.
  The Vikings were a 14th seed when they upset 3rd seeded Indiana, 83-79, on March 14, 1986 in their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
  Ray Dieringer coached a school record 14 seasons from 1969-83. His top assistant, Tom McMahon was with him for all 14 years, the longest tenure for any CSU assistant coach.
  The 2005-06 season marks the Vikings' 14th playing in the Wolstein Center.
15 CSU was a perfect 15-0 at home in both 1987-88 and 1985-86 while establishing the school mark for home wins.
  CSU set an AMCU record with a 15-1 record in conference play in 1992-93.
  Viking players have been selected first team all-conference fifteen times.
  Jim Les set the CSU freshman assist record with 15 at Louisville on Feb. 25, 1982.
  Ray Dieringer's squads topped Akron 15 times, the most wins by a coach over an opponent in school history.
16 There are sixteen players in CSU's 1,000-point club.
  Ken McFadden set a Viking record with 16 assists against Northern Iowa on Feb. 18, 1989.
  Clinton Ransey set the school mark for free throw percentage in a game with a 16-for-16, effort against Akron on Feb. 4, 1985.
  Sixteen Vikings have been named to the various conference all-newcomer teams.
  Cleveland State won a school record 16 straight conference games from Feb. 24, 1992 to Feb. 22, 1993.
17 The highest final national ranking for the Vikings (USA Today, 1986).
  Tahric Gosley grabbed all 17 of his career rebounding high in the second half against Youngstown State on Feb. 13, 2003.
  The Vikings have squared off against 17 schools in conference play.
  CSU players have started 30 games in a season 17 times.
18 CSU compiled a 130-24 record (.844) in 18 seasons at Woodling Gym, the school's first on-campus playing site.
  The Viking season record for consecutive games with a three-point field goal is 18 set by Greg Allen in 1991-92 and tied by Jermaine Robinson in 2003-04.
  Eighteen Vikings have recorded games of ten or more assists.
19 The Vikings were a perfect 19-for-19 from the line versus Concordia (WI) on Feb. 5, 1980 to set the school free throw percentage record.
  Darren Tillis set a school record with a blocked shot in 19 straight games from Feb. 12, 1979 to Jan. 23, 1980.
  William Stanley owns the CSU record with a three-point field goal in 19 consecutive games from Feb. 11, 1989 to Jan. 3, 1990. Jermaine Robinson later matched the mark from March 3, 2003 to Jan. 22, 2004.
  Mike Campbell sank a school record 19 free throws against Buffalo State on Dec. 30, 1967 as CSU won, 88-87, in triple overtime in the championship game of the Cleveland Invitational Tournament. The win gave CSU its first-ever in-season tournament title.
20 Franklin Edwards scored 20 or more points 20 times in 1980-81 to become the lone Viking to have two seasons of 20 or more points in at least 20 games.
21 Franklin Edwards set a then-school record by scoring 20 or more points in 21 games during 1979-80.
  The Vikings have won 21 times in 33 overtime contests at home (.636).
22 The Vikings set an overall school record with 22 straight home wins from Nov. 25, 1985 to Jan. 24, 1987.
  Ken McFadden set a school record by scoring 20 or more points in 22 games during the 1986-87.
  Harvey Smith set a CSU freshman record with 22 rebounds at Muskingum on Jan. 22, 1967. He repeated the effort versus Alliance on Jan. 27, 1967. John Neale tied the mark with 22 boards against Ohio Northern on, Jan. 12, 1970.
23 Ernie Kremling pulled down 23 rebounds at Malone on Jan. 19, 1963, the most by a substitute in school history.
  Joe Jastrzemski has been the P.A. announcer at Cleveland State games for 23 seasons.
24 The Vikings overcame a 24-point second half deficit (49-25) to defeat Detroit, 69-62 on Feb. 5, 2005. It was the largest comeback in school history.
  CSU scored a 24-22 win over Walsh on Jan. 11, 1967, to give John McLendon his 500th victory as a collegiate head coach.
25 Twenty-five Vikings have played in 100 career games. Jermaine Robinson (2000-04) is the latest addition to the list.
26 Damon Stringer needed just 26 games to score 500 career points, the fewest games needed to reach the milestone. He accomplished the feat at Stony Brook on Feb. 16, 2000.
  Viking players have recorded 100 assists in a season 26 times.
27 The Vikings won a regular season record 27 straight home games from Jan. 26, 1985 to Jan. 24, 1987.
  Wilbur Starks set a Viking record for first half points with 27 at Ball State on Jan. 19, 1974.
  Jack Shaughnessy made a then-school record 27 straight free throws in 1949-50.
28 There have been 28 members of the men's basketball team inducted into the CSU Athletic Hall of Fame.
  Kenny Robertson is the only player to have an assist and a steal in every game during a season when he accomplished it in all 28 games during the 1989-90.
29 CSU won a school record 29 games in 1985-86 enroute to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
  The Vikings set a then-NCAA record with 29 steals against Canisius on Dec. 18, 1986.
30 Weldon Kytle set a school record with 30 rebounds against Malone on Feb. 13, 1964. He also scored 30 points in the contest to become the school's only 30-30 player.
  Damon Stringer scored 30 points in the second half versus Bowling Green on Dec. 4, 1999 to become the second Viking to score 30 points in a half.
  Shawn Hood started a CSU freshman record 30 games in 1983-84.
  LaMoyne Porter was 30 years old during 1970-71, the oldest player to don a Viking uniform.
  Thirty different players have received the Varsity "C" Club's Player of the Year Award.
  CSU's 30 wins against Youngstown State are the most against a single opponent.
31 Jamal Jackson, who was wearing No. 31, fired in 31 points versus Southern Utah State on Dec. 5, 1994to set a record for most points by a CSU reserve. Percell Coles matched it with 31 points against IPFW on Nov. 18, 2002. Modibo Niakate also tied the mark against Norfolk State on Nov. 27, 2004.
  Franklin Edwards scored 31 of his school record 49 points in the second half at Xavier on Feb. 25, 1981. It remains the most points ever scored in a single half.
  There have been 31 assistant coaches in school history. Marlo Termini was the first, serving under Jim Rodriguez in 1964-65 and returning for three seasons under Ray Dieringer from 1969-72.
32 The Vikings handed out a school-record 32 assists against Youngstown State on Feb. 13, 1974.
  Theo Dixon (1999-2000) and Ken McFadden (1986-87) share a school record for games scoring in double figures in a season with 32.
  Damon Stringer made a school record 32 straight free throws from Jan. 27 to Feb. 10 in 2000.
33 Eddie Bryant set a CSU season record with an assist in 33 games in 1985-86. Bryant is one of nine Vikes with an assist in every game of a season.
  The Vikings have played 33 overtime games at home, going 21-12 in them (.636).
  James Madison wore No. 33 while setting a CSU mark with 262 career three-point field goals from 1996-2000.
34 Fenn College fielded a basketball squad for 34 seasons.
  The Vikings have scored 100 or more points in a game at home 34 times, owning a 32-2 record (.941).
35 CSU won a school regular season record 35 straight non-conference home games from Dec. 19, 1983 to Feb. 10, 1988.
  Viking players have had 10 or more assists in a game 35 times.
  The Vikings have played in front of crowds of 10,000 or more 35 times. The first was came on Jan. 2, 1980 when 10,168 saw CSU play at Marquette. The most people to see CSU play was 21,713 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY when the Vikes squared off against St. Joseph in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on, March 16, 1986.
36 Don Ross began his Viking career with a bang, scoring a CSU freshman record 36 points in his first collegiate game against Hiram on Dec. 1, 1966.
  Thirty-six players have scored 800 career points in school history.
37 Hiram was an opponent in a school record 37 straight seasons from 1929-68. Fenn did not play during the 1943-44 or 1944-45 seasons due to World War II.
  There have been 37 players in school history who have scored 30 points in a game.
  CSU made 37 field goals while setting a school record for field goal percentage in a game, going 37-of-51 from the field (.685) vs. George Mason on Feb. 5, 1979.
38 The Vikings have played contests in 38 of the 50 states. They have also played schools from 38 states.
39 Franklin Edwards scored 39 points at Florida State on Feb. 18, 1980. It was the second of a school record three straight 30-point games for Edwards.
  CSU has won 39 games decided by one point.
40 Theo Dixon scored in double-figures in 40 straight games from Nov. 17, 2000 to Dec. 22, 2001, the second longest such streak in school history.
  The Vikings forced a school record 40 turnovers against North Carolina A&T on Dec. 1, 1977.
  The 40-point margin of victory in CSU's 88-48 win over Youngstown State Jan. 23, 1993 is the largest margin of victory for the Vikings in a conference game.
41 The 2005-06 season will be the 41st since Fenn College became Cleveland State.
  James Madison needed only 41 games to become the quickest Viking to make 100 career three-point field goals, going over the century mark at Illinois-Chicago on Jan. 9, 1998.
  The Vikings have won 41 of the 45 games in which they have scored 100 or more points.
  Pape Badiane played 41 minutes in a double overtime game against Butler on Feb. 24, 2003, the most-ever by a Viking reserve.
42 Pape Badiane was wearing No. 42 when he blocked a CSU best 42 shots in conference play during the 2002-03 season.
  Weldon Kytle was wearing number 42 when he set the school mark with 30 rebounds against Malone on Feb. 13, 1964.
  CSU has won 42 games by 30 or more points.
43 Kenny Robertson holds the CSU record with a steal in 43 consecutive games from Jan. 16, 1989 to March 1, 1990.
  Eugene Miles played a CSU freshman record 43 minutes at Eastern Michigan on Dec. 8, 1984. James Madison later tied the record at Wright State on Feb. 1, 1997.
44 Clinton Ransey was wearing No. 44 when he set the school record for free throw percentage in a game with a perfect 16-for-16 performance against Akron on Jan. 4, 1985.
45 CSU has scored 100 or more points in 45 contests, posting a, 41-4 mark in those games (.911 ).
46 Fenn opened the 1945-46 season with a 53-35 win over Hiram on Jan. 12, 1946, the latest season opener in school history. The Foxes were resuming play following a two-year hiatus due to World War II.
47 Damon Stringer scored 47 points to lead CSU to a 109-105 win over UW-Milwaukee on Jan. 29, 2000. The total is the second-highest single game total in school history and the most by a Viking in a conference game.
  Raheem Moss made 47 three-pointers in Horizon League play in 2004-05, the most by a Viking in conference play.
48 Darren Tillis blocked 48 shots in both 1979-80 & 1980-81 and is the only CSU player to block 40 shots in a season four times.
  Viking players have played 30 or more games in a season 48 times.
49 Franklin Edwards scored a CSU record 49 points at Xavier on Feb. 25, 1981.
  The Vikings set a school record with 49 field goals against Central Connecticut State on, Nov. 30, 1985.
50 Darren Tillis blocked 50 shots in 1981-82 to become the only Viking to block 50 shots in a season twice.
51 Darren Tillis set a CSU freshman record with 51 blocked shots in 1978-79.
  Ron Harris set a then-school record with an assist in 51 straight games from Dec. 1, 1976 to Feb. 28, 1978. The streak is currently the sixth longest in school history.
  Dave Jacklitch set a then-school record with 41 points against Hiram in the 1950-51 season finale on March 3, 1951.
  There have been 51 players in school history to score 600 career points.
52 Dave Kyle was wearing number 52 when he tallied 37 points at Detroit on Feb. 12, 1976. At the time it was the third highest point total in school history.
53 Gale Drummer and Franklin Edwards needed just 53 games to score 1,000 points and share the school record for fastest to the milestone. Drummer scored his 1,000th point against Eastern Michigan on Feb. 22, 1975 while Edwards drained his versus Augustana (SD) on, 12-8-79.
  Dave Kyle was wearing number 53 when he pulled down a career-high 24 rebounds versus Ohio on Dec. 18, 1976.
54 Weldon Kytle became the first player in program history to score 1,000 career points. He topped the mark in his 54th career game against Indiana (PA) on Feb. 22, 19-64.
  The Vikings won 54 games during the 1985-86 and 1986-87 seasons, the most wins by CSU in back-to-back seasons.
55 James Madison started 55 Horizon League games, the most starts by a Viking in Horizon League play.
56 Jim Les played a school record 56 minutes in a four-overtime game at Kent State on Dec. 4, 1982.
57 Ken McFadden scored 20 points in 57 games during his career, second most in school history.
58 Dave Kyle scored his 1,000th career point in his 58th career game versus Wright State on, 1-27-77.
  Eddie Bryant had an assist in 58 straight games from, 2-23-85 to 2-7-87, the fifth longest streak in CSU annals.
  CSU scored 58 points in the second half at UW-Milwaukee on, 1-29-00, the most points by the Vikings in a half of a Horizon League game.
59 Ken McFadden surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career in just his 59th game, scoring 22 points in a 94-78 win at UIC on Feb. 23, 1987.
  Shawn Hood had an assist in 59 straight games from Dec. 8, 1984 to Dec. 9, 1986, the fourth longest streak in school history.
60 CSU scored a Wolstein Center record 60 points in the first half of a 113-55 romp over Prairie View A&M on Dec. 14, 1999.
  William Stanley became the first Viking with 100 career 3-point FGM when he hit a trey at Marshall on Dec. 16, 1989 in his 60th career game.
  Kenny Robertson had a CSU record 60 steals in conference play in 1988-89.
  Tahric Gosley (1999-2003) and Jermaine Robinson (2000-04) share the school record by playing in 60 Horizon League games.
61 Franklin Edwards owns the school career record with 20 or more points in 61 games.
  Weldon Kytle pulled down his 1,000th career rebound in his 61st career game at Kenyon on Jan. 9, 1965. He holds the CSU mark for career rebounds with 1,241 boards. Darren Tillis (1978-82) is the only other Viking to top the 1,000-rebound mark, finishing his career with 1,045 rebounds.
  Shawn Hood (1983-84) and Kenny Robertson (1986-87) share the CSU freshman record for steals in a season with 61.
  The Vikings grabbed a Wolstein Center record 61 rebounds versus Saginaw Valley State on, 12-4-93.
62 Clinton Ransey scored his 1,000th career point in his 62nd career game versus Youngstown State on Dec. 2, 1986. Ransey would go on to score 1,946 career points, the third-highest total in school history.
63 Franklin Edwards set a then-CSU record with an assist in the final 63 games of his career, starting with a Jan. 20, 1979 win over Akron.
  The Vikings have played 63 overtime games, compiling a 35-28 record (.556).
64 Tahric Gosley set a CSU single-season record with 64 blocked shots in 2000-01.
  Derrick Zeigler played in 64 conference games from 1993-97, the most-ever by a Viking.
  Sixty-four players have scored 500 points or more in a career in school history.
  Fenn College and CSU played Hiram College 64 times, the most games against an opponent in school history.
  With 333 rebounds in 1963-64, Weldon Kytle became the only player in school history with 300 rebounds in back-to-back seasons. At 20.5, Kytle also became the first to average 20 points per game in a season.
65 As in 1965. An action by the Ohio General Assembly in 1964 created Cleveland State University's undergraduate programs from the Fenn College roots with the name change taking affect at the start of the 1965 fall term. The Fenn Foxes became the CSUVikings for the 1965-66 season with the Vikings falling, 83-65 at Hiram on Dec. 1, 1965 in their first game.
  Through the 2004-05 season, CSU has played 65 different opponents at the Wolstein Center.
66 Under Kevin Mackey, the Vikings were, 58-8, in the 66 games in which they scored 90 or more points.
  James Madison set a Viking freshman record with 66 three-point field goals in 1996-97.
  Mike Sweeney set a then-CSU season record with 66 steals in 1981-82.
67 CSU's 67 second half points in its 135-61 romp over Clarion on Dec. 1, 1986 are the most second half points in school history. The Vikings scored 68 points in the first half, making the contest the only game in school history that CSU scored 60 points in each half.
  CSU won a then-record 67 games during Darren Tillis' career (1978-82).
68 Franklin Edwards scored in double-figures in a school record 68 consecutive games from Dec. 23, 1978 until the final game of his career on Feb, 28, 1981.
69 Jamaal Harris had 69 three-point field goals in 2000-01, one shy of the school record set that year by Theo Dixon.
  Walt Chavis had 69 assists in Horizon League games in 2002-03, the most by a Viking in Horizon League play.
70 Damon Stringer (1999-2000) and Theo Dixon (2000-01) each made 70 three-pointers in a single season to share the Viking three-point school record.
  The Vikings tossed in school-record 70 first half points in a 109-68 win over Navy on Dec. 1, 1990 at the Gator Bowl Tournament.
  James Madison used just 70 games to pass the 1,000 point mark for his career, Madison currently ranks fourth in school history with 1,576 points from 1996-2000.
71 Franklin Edwards needed just 71 games to become the first Viking with 300 career assists, passing the mark at Robert Morris on Feb. 11, 1980.
  Shawn Fergus blocked a then-CSU career record 71blocked shots in conference play from 1989-93.
72 The Vikes were 72-26 (.735) when scoring 80 or more points under head coach Ray Dieringer.
73 Franklin Edwards needed just 73 career games to become the fastest Viking to score 1,500 career points, reaching that plateau with a 39-point game at Florida State on Feb. 18, 1980.
  The Vikings made a 3-point field goal in 73 straight games from, Jan. 26, 1991 to Dec. 10, 1993, the third longest streak in CSU history.
