Fencing Finishes 11th At Midwest Conference Team Championships

Last weekend, the Cleveland State Fencing Team participated in the 2001 Midwest Fencing Conference Team Championships held at the University of Notre Dame. As a team, the CSU fencers finished 11th overall with a total score of 340.

The CSU men completed the tournament with a score of 160, which was good enough for a tenth-place finish. Freshman Eric McConkey (Salina, KS/Salina South) placed seventh individually for the foil squad. Freshman Daniel Genzer (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) and sophomore Joe Constanzo (Lyndhurst, OH/Charles F. Bush) placed 11th and 20th respectively for the sabre team, while Senior Tamir Strowder (Cleveland, OH/Brush) was CSU's top finisher at epee with a 16th place finish.

The CSU women's team tied for tenth overall with a score of 180. Juniors Marta Roselli (Padova, Italy/Liceo Classico Tito Livio) and Marilena Morariu (Fairview Park, OH/Fairview) finished in the top ten in foil competition, placing sixth and eighth respectively. Sophomore Zaidat Bombata (Nigeria, Africa/East Tech) represented the Cleveland State sabre squad with a 16th-place finish, and sophomore Joy Visnjic-Flaherty (Parma Heights, OH/Valley Forge) placed 28th for CSU at epee.

Host Notre Dame won the event with scores of 450 for the men and 420 for the women. The Irish also placed first in the men's competition while the Northwestern women took home the top spot with a score of 425.
