EVANSTON, Ill. - Cleveland State traveled to Northwestern on Saturday for its first team competition of the season. The men's team defeated Chicago (12-9), Minnesota (14-13) and Wisconsin (15-9) and lost to Northwestern (22-5), while the women upended Wisconsin (11-5) and fell to Chicago (22-5), No. 7 Northwestern (27-0) and Minnesota (19-8).
Individually, sophomore Mike Merker posted a spotless 12-0 record in foil, while classmate Nate Krieger was 10-2 in epee. On the women's side, sophomore Pam Marvinney went 7-5 in epee, while classmate Erin Mick was 6-6 in foil.
"Our men's team got off to a great start with three victories," head coach Jim Sager said. "We have the nucleus of a strong team. On the women's side, I thought we showed great improvement and I am proud of how we fought all day against tough competition."
Cleveland State is in action again on Dec. 4 when it hosts the CSU Duals on Alumni Day. The Vikings will welcome Bowling Green, Case Western Reserve and Oberlin to the annex gymnasium in the Convocation Center.
