Cleveland State Opens Second Semester in Detroit

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University fencing team opens the new decade this weekend as it resumes action after the holiday break.

The Vikings will head to the Detroit Mercy Invitational this Sunday, Jan. 12, for dual competition.

CSU will begin the day by facing the host Titans (10:30 a.m.). The Viking women will then take on Ohio State at Noon while the CSU men have a bye. Both Cleveland State squads will then face the same four opponents to conclude the day—Lawrence (12:30 p.m.), Wayne State (2:00 pm), Michigan State (3:30 p.m.) and Oakland (5:00 p.m.).

The CSU men and women defeated both Michigan State and Oakland at their past two dual events—the CSU Duals and the Case Western Duals. The Viking women lost to Ohio State in the season-opening OSU Duals. The matchups against Detroit, Lawrence and Wayne State will be the first of the season for CSU against those opponents.

The Vikings were most recently in action in mid-November when the men's and women's squads combined to tally at least a dozen wins for the second straight competition. The CSU men went 7-0 at the Case Western Duals while the Viking women went 6-1, dropping a one-point matchup to Michigan after having beaten Michigan in their home event.

This will be the first of four consecutive weekends of dual competition for CSU. The squads will compete in the Army Invitational and the Vassar Invitational next weekend.
