CLEVELAND, Ohio – Five incoming members of the Cleveland State University fencing team were recently named to the USA Fencing All-Academic Team.

Cleveland State's five selections tied it with Duke University for second highest figure nationally among all NCAA fencing schools.

"This is very exciting news for CSU fencing," head coach Andy Tulleners said. "This kind of recognition highlights how Cleveland State is becoming a more recognized and sought after academic institution for incoming student-athletes and students as a whole. Our team is looking forward to another excellent year."

Three future Vikings earned First Team honors—Jared Felker, Ilyssa Freiburger and Harry Hardman—while Gabriella Hirsch was named to the Second Team and Paul DiVenti earned an Honorable Mention spot.

Felker (Rockford, Mich.) attended Rockford High School and competed in epee for Grand Rapids Fencing Academy.

Freiburger (Oceanside, Calif.) attended Sandia Classical Academy and competes in epee.

Hardman (Cranberry Township, Pa.) attended Aquinas Academy of Pittsburgh and competed in foil for Pittsburgh Fencers' Club.

Hirsch (Huntington Woods, Mich.) attended International Academy and competed in foil for Renaissance Fencing Club.

DiVenti (Sykesville, Md.) attended Liberty High School and competed in epee and foil for Homewood Fencing Club.

The 2019 All-Academic Team was celebrated earlier this month at the 2019 Summer National Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
