NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Cleveland State University fencing team continued postseason action Saturday at the NCAA Midwest Regional inside the Castellan Family Fencing Center.

Saturday's event is the final qualification step in advance of the NCAA Championships, which will be held in just under two weeks at Cleveland State.

Saturday's host Notre Dame is the defending national champion and the top-ranked team nationally on both the men's and women's sides. Both Ohio State squads and the Northwestern women that competed Saturday sit among the top 10 nationally. 

Ahmad Taqi had the highest individual finish by a Viking at the event, placing seventh in men's foil. He posted seven victories in the round-robin event.

Taqi was one of five Vikings competing in the men's foil event. John Wenger finished ninth, Will Waters took 10th, Sawyer Cornett placed 14th and Jakarri Kent finished 15th. Wenger and Waters both placed higher than their seed.

Ian Wu and Jonah Kasallis finished 10th and 11th, respectively, in the men's epee discipline.

Claire Maltman and Shelbie Seeberg finished 11th and 15th, respectively, in the women's foil event, with the former outpacing her seed.

Abigail Barr and Dorian Pichola were the lone Vikings in the women's epee and women's saber. The former finished 11th and the latter placed 12th, finishing higher than she was seeded.

Cleveland State will be hosting the 2019 NCAA Fencing Championships March 21-24 in the Wolstein Center. Selections to the Championships will be announced this Tuesday, March 12.
