COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Cleveland State University fencing team concluded action in the Midwest Conference Championships Sunday with the team portion of the competition inside Ohio State's French Field House.

CSU finished in eighth place among 19 teams with 1,005 points.

The CSU men posted their best finish at the event in 15 years. In the men's-only standings, the Vikings took fifth with 635 points.

The best finish by a Viking unit on the day came from the men's foil squad which took second place, finishing only behind nationally ranked Ohio State. Sawyer Cornett, Jakarri Kent, Ahmad Taqi and John Wenger competed for the men's foil unit.

The Vikings rolled to the final in the men's foil event, sweeping past three straight opponents without dropping a single point. CSU took down Oberlin and Purdue before dispatching second-seed Northwestern by a 5-0 margin as well. The Vikings came up on the short end of a 5-2 matchup to the Buckeyes in the final.

The men's epee unit joined its foil brethren in securing three victories on the day. After taking down Iowa, 5-2, in its opening match, the Vikings dropped their quarterfinal bout to Michigan, 5-3. However, Cleveland State bounced back, tallying back-to-back 5-3 victories over Illinois and Northwestern to claim fifth place in the event.

Cleveland State's women's foil team also provided a highlight, securing three wins and finishing higher than its seed. The group swept Indiana in the opening round before dropping its quarterfinal match to Wayne State. However, the Vikings bounced back with wins over Lawrence (5-3) and Detroit Mercy (5-2) to place fifth. A trio of freshman comprised the group—Claire Maltman, Dorian Pichola and Shelbie Seeberg.

The men's sabre unit and women's epee unit finished 11th and 12th, respectively.

The postseason will continue in two weeks for Cleveland State as those individuals that have qualified will compete at the NCAA Midwest Regional hosted by Notre Dame.
