COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Cleveland State University fencing team opened action at the Midwest Conference Championships Saturday inside Ohio State's French Field House.

The first day of competition was the individual portion of the event, featuring action in all three disciplines for both genders.

Sophomore Ahmad Taqi had the best individual finish by a Viking on the day, taking 10th in the men's foil event. Two teammates—John Wenger and Sawyer Cornett—followed closely behind, giving CSU a trio of individuals among the top 15.

Freshman Ian Wu and Claire Maltman both tallied a 13th place finish on the day, the former in men's epee and the latter in women's foil. Junior Jonah Kasallis also was among the top 20 in that epee event.

Abigail Barr and Dante Centuori were the top Vikings in the women's epee and men's sabre competitions, respectively, with both notching top-20 finishes on the day.

Cleveland State will be right back in action Sunday to contest the team portion of the Midwest Conference Championships.
