CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University fencing team hosted its lone dual event of the season, the CSU Duals, as it competed against six programs Saturday inside Woodling Gymnasium.

The CSU men came up on the short end of the scoreboard six times Saturday while the Viking women won one of six matchups. Both the men's and women's teams were competing with just five student-athletes in their lineups.

The Cleveland State men lost to Denison (11-16), Michigan (6-21), Detroit Mercy (8-19), Indiana (12-15), Case Western Reserve (12-15) and Michigan State (7-20).

The Cleveland State women lost to Denison (7-20), Michigan State (5-22) and Detroit Mercy (11-15) before rebounding to defeat Indiana (15-6). CSU ended its day with setbacks to Case Western Reserve (10-14) and Michigan State (8-19).

The epee unit led the way for the CSU men, winning 33 points on the day. Sophomore Jonah Kasallis won 13 of his 18 matchups while freshman Zachary Clark won 12 of 18. Freshman Declan Forth also had a fine showing in the saber, winning against 13 of 18 opponents.

The foil squad for the CSU women racked up 42 points, thanks to a pair of dominating efforts from senior Sarah Mok and freshman Emma Hartlaub.

Both Mok and Hartlaub lost only once on the day while racking up an impressive 17 victories.

Cleveland State will conclude its weekend with another home event Sunday, the ninth annual John Szent-Kiraly Open.
