Fencing to Send Nine to NCAA Regionals

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State fencing team qualified nine athletes for the NCAA Regionals that will be contested on March 12 at Ohio State.

Qualifying on the men's side are Alex Hoirup and Adam Mack in the foil, Paul Duchow, Logan Shoemaker and Griffin Winterman in the epee and Matt Gebbett in the saber.

Sarah Mok and Caitlin Thompson qualified in the women's foil and will be joined by teammate Simiola Babayode who qualified in the epee.

The fencing teams competed at the Midwest Conference Championships over the weekend at Ohio State with several individuals earning awards.

The men's epee team of Duchow, Shoemaker, Winterman, Logan Eskew and Michael Schloemer claimed second place, while the men's foil team of Hoirup, Mack and Gebbert also took second place.

The epee team had the strongest showing for a women's team, placing fourth overall. The team consisted of Mok, Thompson, Babayode and Fatima Ayoubi.

Mok was named to the All-Midwest Fencing second team in the foil, while Gebbett was selected to the second team in the saber. Both finished eighth in their respective events.

The trio of Shoemaker (9th in epee), Mack (10th in foil) and Hoirup (12th in foil) were all named to the All-Midwest Fencing honorable mention team.
