Fencers Compete at Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. - The Vikings competed at Northwestern on Sunday Feb 1st in what is always the strongest competition of the season.

"When facing teams at Northwestern at this point it is more important see how the fencers are performing than recording team wins and losses," head coach Andy Tulleners said. "As whole the men's and women's team performed much better this weekend against stronger teams than we did at Vassar."

The men were 1-7 on the day. The only win against Caltech. The men's team was led by senior foilist Phelan Spence with an 18-6 record on the day. Behind Spence was freshman saberist Matthew Gebbett who was 14-10 on the day.

The women's team was 0-9 on the day. Despite the record the women's team had some very good fencing and showed steady improvement. Senior saberist Christine Bocci had the strongest day of her season and college fencing career going 15-12.

"While Christine has had days with more wins I think today she fenced the best she has ever fenced, and against some of the best opponents in college fencing," Tulleners said.

The fencing team is at Notre Dame for  their last meet of the season on February 7th.
