The Vikings Battled but Fell Short at West Point

The Cleveland State Fencing team competed at West Point on Saturday Janaury 17th. The men were 2-2 on the day beating out Hunter 18-9 and Swarthmore 19-8. The Viking men lost two close matches to Army 12-15 and Lafayette 12-15.

"The men's team had some good fencing bouts but we were inconsistenn our fencing when we had to pull out wins and fell short of being 4-0 on the day as a result." said coach Tulleners after the men's team performance. The men's team is now 13-3 for the season.

The women's team was 4-2 for the day. The women defeated Lafayette 19-7, City College of New York, 16-10 Swarthmore 15-12 and Hunter 16-11. The women's team lost to Army 12-15 and Stevens Tech 5-22.

"Our women's team fenced pretty well for the day. I think our results were what we were capable of. I wanted to see us come out of the day 5-1, but I knew we would have to be at our best to beat out Army." The women's team is now 13-5 for the season.

The men's team was led by senior foilist Phelan Spence who was perfect on the day going 12-0. Spence has a perfect record for the year with a 47-0 record. Backing up Spence was freshman saberist Matthew Gebbett who was 10-2 for the day. Gebbett is 42-3 for the season.

The women's team was led by freshman foilist Sarah Mok going 14-3 on the day and is now 38-7 for the season. Also having a great day was sophomore epeeist Simiola Babayode who was 10-6 on the day and is now 25-21 for the season. Senior saberist Christine Bocci was 7-3 for the day and is 26-11 for the season.

The Vikings will compete at Vassar on Sunday January 18 in the toughest meet of their season so far. They will face off against Vassar, Yale, Sacred Heart, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Tufts, and Long Island University.
