Evanston, Ill.- Both the Cleveland State men's and women's fencing teams performed well this past weekend, participating at the Northwestern Duals in Evanston, Ill.

The men finished 1-5 on the day, while the women finished 0-6 while being short in numbers to compete as a team. Although the men only picked up one win on the day, that victory secured a winning season for the Vikings. The winning season is the first in program history under Head Coach Andy Tulleners.

Four double-digit winners led CSU on the men's side, in Phelan SpencePaul Duchow, Levi Youngand Tom Bienvenu. Spence was the wins leader for the Vikings, taking home a 13-5 day in foil. In epee Paul Duchow also went 12-6 and Levi Young went 10-8, while Tom Bienvenu went 10-8 in sabre for CSU.

"Individually Phelan Spence did a really nice job taking the lead," said Head Coach Andy Tulleners. "He knocked off three Princeton foil guys, and they were second last year at the NCAA Championships."

"That was a very solid showing for Phelan," he added.

Tullerers also mentioned the epee group as a whole, that while no one guy stood out, as a group they picked each other up and performed well all day long.

On the women's side Amanda Brown led the way for CSU, picking up seven wins on the day. The seven win day gave Brown 20 victories on the year. Christine Bocci was second on the team with four wins.

"Amanda Brown really performed well on the weekend," Tulleners said on his lone women's epee fencer.

Overall, Tulleners was happy with the way the teams performed. "I think we had one of our best performances at Northwestern in the last five or six years going back before my time as head coach." he said.

CSU will be back in competition February 23rd when they head to the University of Notre Dame for the Notre Dame duals.
