Four Earn Spots on Horizon League Spring All-Academic Teams

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Four Cleveland State student-athletes earned spots on the Horizon League Spring All-Academic teams that were announced on Wednesday morning.

Earning spots on the teams were senior men’s golfer Brendan Byrne, senior women’s golfer Shelly Ford, sophomore women’s golfer Allyson Hackman and sophomore softball player Katelind Phillips.

Byrne, who recently graduated with a 3.81 grade point average as a civil engineering major, helped the Vikings claim the Horizon League Championship this year and earn a spot at the NCAA Regionals where CSU finished a program-best 10th. Bryne, who ranked third on the team with a 76.1 scoring average, garnered a spot on the league all-tournament team after tying for seventh place at the league championship.

Ford, a recent graduate with a 3.87 GPA as a Health Science/Pre-Physician Assistant major, ranked second on the team with an 80.6 scoring average, the seventh lowest in a season in school history. She shared medalist honors at the Butler Spring Invitational in March, becoming just the third player in school history to win an event. Ford recorded two top-five finishes and three top-10’s this year, including a ninth place showing at the league championship.

Hackman, who posted the third lowest scoring average in CSU history this year (79.5), earned first team All-Horizon League honors and was named to the Horizon League all-tournament team after tying for fourth place. It was her second straight appearance on the all-tournament team. Hackman posted two top-five finishes and four top-10’s this year and was CSU’s top finisher in five of the 10 events this year. She carries a 3.67 GPA as a mechanical engineering major.

Phillips, who has a 3.78 GPA as a Science/Pre-Physician Assistant major, led the team with a .370 batting average this year. She also posted a .493 on-base percentage, the third highest in a season in school history, while contributing five doubles, two triples, one homer and 18 RBI in helping the Vikings earn a spot in the league tournament.
