A total of eight intercollegiate athletics teams from Cleveland State University have received an Academic Progress Rate (APR) recognition from the NCAA as announced on Wednesday.

The NCAA announced that men's basketball, women's cross country and indoor/outdoor track and field, men's and women's fencing, women's golf and women's tennis all received the honor.

CSU had six sports that are sponsored by the Horizon League earn the honor, tied for the most with Valparaiso.

The awards are presented each year to teams finishing among the top-10 percent of their respective sport based on the most recent multi-year APR. The calculation of APR tracks the academic progress of each student-athlete and includes eligibility, retention and graduation.

Cleveland State joins Detroit as the only League schools to receive the award in each of the nine years it has been presented. The CSU cross country team is one of 146 teams to earn the Public Recognition Awards every year.

This is the sixth straight year that the women's fencing team has been honored and the third straight year for men's basketball and women's tennis. Men's fencing is receiving the honor for the second straight year and women's golf is earning its first honor.

A total of 275 Division I schools (and seven in other divisions who have a sport competing in Division I) placed at least one team on the top APR list, up 19 from last year.

The 1,049 teams publicly recognized for high achievement represent 631 women’s teams and 418 men’s or mixed squads. In 2013, there were 976 teams recognized.

Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 14.
