A LOOK AT WHAT'S HAPPENING

MEN'S GOLF

  • The Vikings are out of action until April 1-2 when CSU competes in the Seattle U Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay, site of the 2015 US Open.
  • It will be the second to last tournament of the season as the Vikings prepare for the Horizon League Championship at the end of April.
  • CSU finished sixth of 11 teams at the USF Invitational last week as senior Joey Krecic tied for 14th place with rounds of 73-78-76 (227).

WOMEN'S GOLF

  • The Vikings are back in action at the Babs Steffens Hatter Collegiate from Saturday through Monday (March 24-26) in Florida.
  • CSU has been out of action since tying for 13th place at the Grand Canyon Invitational on Feb. 24-25.
  • Emily Turski shot a final round 74 at Grand Canyon and was CSU's top finisher as she tied for 47th place.

MEN'S LACROSSE

  • Cleveland State closes the month of March this Saturday by heading to Penn State, facing its third Big Ten opponent of the season.
  • The Vikings began this past week with a 12-6 win over Lafayette, as CSU outscored the Leopards, 5-0, in the final quarter. Nate Menendez had a hat trick in the win.
  • Cleveland State then dropped a 9-3 contest to No. 3 Duke on Sunday. Freshman Stephen Russo made 17 saves in the contest as the Vikings held the nation's top offense to one of its least efficient outings in recent memory.

SOFTBALL

  • The Vikings (9-16) are out of action until CSU hosts Niagara for a doubleheader next Wednesday (March 28) at 2:00 pm
  • CSU played six games in Hawaii last week, posting a 1-5 mark. Five of the games were decided by one run, while the Vikings also played #4 Tennessee in its first game.
  • In a 1-0 win over North Dakota, Mackenzie Joecken drove in the lone run and also threw a complete game, one-hitter.

MEN'S TENNIS

  • Cleveland State (9-8) will return home following a six-match roadswing to begin Horizon League play this weekend, hosting Green Bay at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 24.
  • Last time out, the Vikings played a trio of matches in the state of Florida during their annual Spring Break Trip, facing tough competition in Miami, Barry and Palm Beach Atlantic.
  • Nico Mostardi and Matthew Terry both eclipsed the 20-win mark for the season last week, Mostardi owning a team-best 20-6 record and Terry standing at 20-9.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

  • The Vikings (4-10) will begin their nine-match Horizon League slate this weekend, hosting Green Bay (Saturday, March 24) and Milwaukee (Sunday, March 25) in the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.
  • Last week, Cleveland State faced a pair of nationally-ranked opponents on their annual Spring Break Trip, playing hard-fought matches against FIU and Barry.
  • Isabella Spindler (No. 1) and Blanche Lenoan (No. 6) each picked up singles wins on the trip, with Spindler now standing at 12-11 overall this season. 

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD

  • The Vikings will take a week off from competition before continuing their outdoor season at the Oliver Nikoloff Open hosted by Cincinnati on Saturday, March 31.
  • Last weekend, the Vikings opened the outdoor season at the William & Mary Tribe Invitational, coming home with a pair of runner-up performances from Chan'lier Myers in the 100 Meter Dash and the 4x100 Relay Team.

WRESTLING

  • Junior Evan Cheek made his NCAA Championships debut in Cleveland this past week.
  • Cheek dropped a hard-fought, 4-2, decision to the defending national champion at 141 pounds in his opening bout. He had a lead entering the final period in his first consolation bout but was unable to hang on for a win.
  • Cheek finished with 24 wins on the season and won the EWL title, the first of his career.

VIKING OF THE WEEK

Mackenzie Joecken | Sr. | Softball
Joecken hit .471 (8-17) during CSU's six games in Hawaii last week. She also scored one run and had two doubles with five runs batted in. Joecken had a .588 slugging percentage and had at least one hit in five of the six games, including multiple hits in three games. She drove in the lone run in CSU's 1-0 win over North Dakota, while also pitching a complete game, one hitter in the win.

Evan Cheek | Jr. | Wrestling
Competed at the NCAA Championships in the 141 pound weight class.

Nico Mostardi | So. | Men's Tennis
Became the first CSU player to win 20 matches this year with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles against Barry.

Stephen Russo | Fr. | Men's Lacrosse
Made 17 saves against No. 3 Duke, allowing just nine goals which tied a season-low for the Blue Devils.
