A LOOK AT WHAT'S HAPPENING

MEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Cleveland State (11-22) continues play in the Horizon League tournament with a semifinal game against No. 4 Oakland on Monday (March 5) at 7:00 pm in Detroit on ESPNU.
  • The winner advances to the championship on Tuesday (March 6) night at 7:00 pm and will play the winner of the other semifinal between No. 2 Wright State and No. 6 Milwaukee.
  • The Vikings advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2015 with wins over Youngstown State (72-71) and top-seeded and defending tournament champion Northern Kentucky (89-80).
  • Kenny Carpenter had 22 points in the win over YSU, while Tyree Appleby - who was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman team last week - had 24 points and a career-best seven rebounds in the victory over NKU.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

  • Last time out, the Vikings (19-11) bowed out of the 2018 Horizon League Tournament with a second round loss to Wright State.
  • Cleveland State entered the #HLWBB Tournament as the No. 6 seed after finishing the regular season with a 19-10 overall record.
  • The Vikings were highlighted by three All-League honorees; Ashanti Abshaw (First Team), Khayla Livingston (First Team) and Shadae Bosley (All-Defensive Team).

FENCING

  • Cleveland State will host the NCAA Midwest Regional this Saturday, March 10, at Woodling Gym.
  • The women's competition in all three weapons begins at 9:00 a.m. with the men's action slated to begin at 12:30 p.m.
  • Three Vikings -- freshman Declan Forth, freshman Emma Hartlaub and senior Sarah Mok -- have qualified to compete at the event.

MEN'S GOLF

  • CSU is out of action until March 12-13 when the Vikings compete in the South Florida Invitational.
  • The Vikings opened the spring season at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate last week, placing 17th overall.
  • Anton Krecic was CSU's top finisher as he tied for 37th place with a 226 total (71-75-80).

MEN'S LACROSSE

  • Cleveland State will be off from competition this week before hosting a pair of home games next week on Tuesday (March 13) and Sunday (March 18).
  • The Vikings dropped their lone game this past week as Canisius scored twice in the final two minutes to claim a 12-11 victory.
  • Freshman Michael Wilson had four points, freshman Stephen Russo made a season-high 14 saves and sophomore Danny Tesler won a career-high 15 faceoffs.

SOFTBALL

  • The Vikings (8-6) head west to play five games in the Bulldog Classic this weekend (March 9-11).
  • CSU plays Monmouth and host Fresno State on Friday, California and UC-Santa Barbara on Saturday and Monmouth on Sunday.
  • Through the first three weeks of the season, Macy Kaisk leads the Viking offense, hitting .400 with two homers and eight RBI.

MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING

  • Freshman Matt Akers will compete at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships this Thursday (March 8) and Friday (March 9) at Ohio State.
  • Akers finished second in the 1-meter event at the Horizon League Championships with 301.90 points and was fourth in the 3-meter event with 315.45 points.

MEN'S TENNIS

  • Cleveland State (9-5) will return to the courts during its annual Spring Break Trip, traveling to Florida for a trio of matches against Miami (Sunday, March 11), Barry (Tuesday, March 13) and Palm Beach Atlantic (Wednesday, March 14).
  • The Vikings picked up a 4-3 victory against Xavier last time out, notching their fourth win out of the last five matches.
  • Entering the Spring Break Trip, the trio of Nico Mostardi, Matthew Terry and Luke Phillips all have a team-high 19 singles wins on the year, while Phillips and Benjamin Slade have team-high nine wins this spring.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

  • The Vikings (4-7) will return to action with a single match this week, hosting Akron at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6.
  • Last time out, Cleveland State posted a 7-0 victory at St. Bonaventure, picking up its third straight win.
  • Entering Tuesday's contest senior Aleksandra Golawska is tied for ninth on the CSU Singles Wins List with 62 career wins after picking up a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles last time out.

WRESTLING

  • Junior Evan Cheek won the Eastern Wrestling title at 141 pounds by posting pins in the quarterfinals and championship matches and a sudden-victory decision in the semifinals.
  • Cheek's first-period pin in the final came against an undefeated wrestler who was ranked among the top five nationally. That result helped him earn the Outstanding Wrestler of the Championships award.
  • Redshirt senior Nick Corba and freshman Georgio Poullas both finished fourth. Corba will wait to see if he earns an at-large berth to join Cheek at the NCAA Championships.
  • Cleveland State finished sixth in the team scoring with 25.5 points.

VIKING OF THE WEEK

Evan Cheek | Jr. | Wrestling

Cheek claimed the 141 pound title at the EWL Championship on Saturday with three straight wins. Seeded third in the weight class, Cheek opened with a fall in 6:48 and then advanced to the finals with a 6-4 sudden victory over the No. 2 ranked wrestler. In the finals, Cheek pinned the top-seed and No. 4 ranked grappler in the country - who was undefeated - in 2:52 to claim the title.

Tyree Appleby | Fr. | Men's Basketball
Scored 24 points with career-high seven rebounds as CSU upset top-seeded Northern Kentucky in the league quarterfinals.

Shadae Bosley | Sr. | Women's Basketball
Concluded her career with 145 career blocked shots, ranking third all-time in program history.

Matthew Terry | Fr. | Men's Tennis
Picked up a 4-6, 6-0, 7-6(7) win at No. 1 singles against Xavier, helping the Vikings earn a 4-3 match victory.

Michael Wilson | Fr. | Men's Lacrosse
Tallied four points with two goals and two assists on Sunday at Canisius.
