Three From CSU Named to Horizon League Spring Academic All-League Teams

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State senior women's golfer Allyson Hackman and senior softball players Erica McNew and Katelind Phillips were all named to the 2016 Horizon League Spring Academic All-League teams that were announced on Friday morning.

A total of 101 student-athletes from eight spring sports were honored in balloting by the League's faculty athletics representatives and sports information directors.

Hackman is making her third straight appearance on the academic all-league team. Hackman capped her CSU career by placing third at the League championship in April, earning a spot on the all-tournament team for the fourth straight year. A three-time first team All-Horizon League selection, Hackman finished her career with a 78.9 scoring average, tops in program history.

She graduated with a 3.55 grade point average as a mechanical engineering major.

McNew is making her second appearance on the academic all-league team after being voted to the squad in 2013.The 2016 Horizon League Player of the Year, McNew became the first player in CSU history to earn first team all-league honors in all four seasons. She was named to the NFCA All-Midwest Region first team after posting a CSU single season record .474 batting average and tying the single season school record with 51 runs batted in. In addition, McNew hit 15 home runs and added 38 runs and nine doubles and posted a .874 slugging percentage and a .649 on-base percentage.

She also drew a CSU school record 67 walks this year, breaking the old mark by 24 walks, and was issued 27 intentional walks. McNew tied an NCAA single game record twice this year with four intentional walks in a game and reached base safely in 14 straight plate appearances at one point this year, tied for the second longest streak in NCAA history.

McNew finished her career with a CSU record .407 batting average and a school record 151 RBI. In addition, she also tied the school record with 141 career runs and ranked second in program history in hits (219) and home runs (51).

McNew had a 3.35 GPA as an Exercise Fitness Specialist major.

Phillips is also making her second appearance on the academic all-league team, also earning a nod in 2014. A first team All-Horizon League selection this year, Phillips ranked sixth in the Horizon League in average (.371) and fourth with 13 doubles. One of the most versatile players in the League, she made 23 starts at shortstop this year, 17 in the outfield, eight at third base and five at second base.

 

Phillips concluded her career ranked fifth in CSU history with a .339 average, sixth with 185 hits and ninth with 30 doubles.

She sported a 3.52 GPA as a Health Sciences, Pre-Med major.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
