CLEVELAND - Cleveland State senior Michele Penney has been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Announced on Wednesday by the League office, this marks the 13th time a Viking has earned Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors this season.
Penney was instrumental in CSU winning three consecutive one-run games over the home-standing Flames, hitting .500 (5-for-10) with a double, two home runs, four RBI, four runs scored and a 1.200 slugging percentage. In the series opener, the Ravenna, Ohio native doubled and scored the Vikings' first run in the fifth inning and then a frame later hit a two-run home run to put CSU up for the first time, 5-4. In the series finale, her solo homer in the second inning put the Vikings up 2-1.
On the year, Penney is hitting .287 with 19 runs scored, six doubles, 14 RBI and a team-leading four home runs.
The Vikings close out the regular season with a three-game series at Detroit on May 5-6, before hosting the Horizon League Championship on May 10-12.
