INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - For the first time in the program's history, the Cleveland State women's tennis team won its opening match at the Horizon League Championship, knocking off the No. 3 seed, UW-Green Bay, 4-3, on Saturday morning in Indianapolis, Ind. The Vikings, now 10-14 on the year, have tied the single-season win mark, originally set by the 1983-84 team.
"This is easily the biggest win in the history of the program," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "After losing the doubles point, we had a strong comeback and managed to pull off the upset."
Cleveland State picked up its four points at the No. 1 through 4 spots in the singles lineup. Sarah Galon, the league's Newcomer of the Year, defeated Alexis Watson, 7-5, 6-1, in the top singles match, while Paulina Reyes got a straight-set win at No. 3, defeating Amber Murdoch, 7-5, 6-4. Rebekah Bicksler won her match at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0, over Amanda Dworak. Morgan Ungerott capped the win with a three-set win at No. 2, defeating Heather Harding, 7-6(9), 5-7, 6-2.
The Vikings took just one of the three doubles matches to open the day's action, as Galon and Ungerott picked up an 8-5 win at the top spot.
Cleveland State advances to face Butler, the No. 2 seed, on Saturday afternoon.
