Women’s Tennis Adds Vasilescu For 2020-21 Campaign

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State women's tennis head coach Frank Polito has announced the addition of Miruna Vasilescu to the roster for the upcoming 2020-21 campaign. Vasilescu joins the Vikings as a transfer from the University of Akron.

"I am very excited for Miruna to become a Viking. I have coached against her the past three years, and she is the kind of player that will fit in very well with our system," Polito said. "She is a big time player that will make a great impact on our program, and will certainly help us as we continue to chase down a Horizon League title."

Vasilescu spent the last three seasons with the Zips, earning a pair of All-MAC honors while also being named the 2018 MAC Newcomer of the Year.

"I am very thankful for this opportunity that Coach Polito has given me, and I am very happy to be a Viking and wear the Green & White," Vasilescu said.

During the shortened 2019-20 campaign Vasilescu tallied a 10-8 singles record playing at the top two spots in the lineup, while she also recorded a 4-4 mark at the No. 1 doubles spot.

As a sophomore, Vasilescu posted a 22-10 singles record, including a 13-5 mark at No. 2 singles during the 2019 spring season. Vasilescu also finished the year with a 26-9 doubles record as one of Akron's top doubles players, earning All-MAC First Team accolades.

In her first season with the Zips, Vasilescu posted a 17-5 singles record during dual match play, finishing her rookie campaign as Akron's No. 1 singles player. After being named to the All-MAC Second Team and the MAC Newcomer of the Year, Vasilescu finished the 2017-18 campaign ranked No. 14 in the Oracle/ITA Midwest Singles rankings.

Prior to her collegiate career, Vasilescu was a two-time national German Nike Junior Team finalist and won the 2016 Krumbacher Hallen-Cup, posting an overall record of 149-50.
