Women’s Tennis Set For Dayton & Xavier Matches

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team will return to action with a pair of matches this weekend, traveling to Dayton on Friday, February 21 and hosting Xavier on Sunday, February 23.

Last Time Out…
The Vikings split their matches against Buffalo and Seton Hall, dropping a 6-1 contest against the Bulls, and picking up a 7-0 sweep against the Pirates. Cleveland State's 7-0 victory over Big East opponent Seton Hall marked the second sweep of the season for the Vikings, and improved them to 4-1 at the MMTP this spring.

…Vikings At The MMTP
Following last Sunday's match against the Pirates, the Vikings now stand at 37-11 all-time in the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion, and own a 13-2 record at the MMTP over the last two seasons. Sunday's match against Xavier will be the sixth of a 14-match home slate for the Vikings this season.

Avram Named #HLWTEN Singles Player of the Week
Earlier this week, senior Kateryna Avram was named the Horizon League Singles Player of the Week, earning her first weekly honor after posting a 2-0 weekend. Avram earned a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 come-from-behind victory at Buffalo and then posted a 6-0, 6-1 straight-set win against Seton Hall playing at No. 4 and No. 3 singles, respectively.

…Avram Remains Perfect This Spring
With her two wins last weekend, Kateryna Avram remained perfect this spring, as she improved to 7-0 in singles during dual match play. Avram, who is one of just three Horizon League players to pick up a win in every match their team has played, also owns a team-best 12-7 record overall this year.

Mrcela & Prosenjak Claim #HLWTEN Doubles Team of the Week
For the second time this season, Cleveland State's top doubles team of Klara Mrcela and Lara Prosenjak claimed Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week honors, making it a clean sweep for the Vikings in #HLWTEN weekly awards. Mrcela and Prosenjak picked up a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles against Buffalo in their lone match as a duo, improving to 4-2 this spring. For the year, the duo now owns a team-best 11-4 doubles record.

Lenoan Closing In On 50 Career wins
Following her win at No. 2 singles against Seton Hall last weekend, senior Blanche Lenoan enters the fourth week of the spring season with 44 career singles wins. Lenoan, who became the second Viking to reach double-digit wins on the year last time out, is just six wins shy of becoming the 16th Viking all-time with 50 Career singles victories. 

Head Coach Frank Polito
Frank Polito is in his second year at the helm of the Vikings, and his eighth year overall at Cleveland State. Last year, Polito helped the Vikings to a 16-9 overall record, including an 8-1 mark in regular season league matchups. Polito and the Vikings captured a share of the 2019 Regular Season #HLWTEN Championship last year, and earned an appearance in the league championship match for the first time since 2014.
