Women’s Tennis Set To Open Fall Campaign In Cancun, Mexico

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's tennis team will begin its 2019 fall campaign this week, traveling south to Cancun, Mexico for the Iberostar College Cup.

The Vikings will join Wyoming and Southeastern Louisiana at the three-day tournament, which will take place Wednesday, September 25 through Friday, September 27.

2019 Fall Campaign
This will mark the first of four tournaments for the Vikings this fall, with Cleveland State also set to compete at the Viking Invitational (Oct. 4-6), Akron Shootout (Oct. 25-27) and UB Fall Invite (Nov. 1-3).

The Vikings
Cleveland State returns seven letterwinners for the 2019-20 season, including the senior trio of Kateryna Avram, Blanche Lenoan and Siân Payne. This group will be joined by juniors Klara Mrcela and Gaby Schoenberg and sophomores Lauren Longo and Lara Prosenjak. Last season, this group helped the Vikings earn a Horizon League Regular Season co-championship and an appearance in the #HLWTEN Tournament championship match.

…Singh Joins The Vikings
This veteran core will be joined by newcomer Prinkle Singh during the upcoming 2019-20 campaign, as Singh joined the Vikings last month as a true freshman. A native of Chandigarh, India, Singh was a five-time Nationals winner in the Under-12 and Under-14 age groups, and help a top-five ranking in her age group throughout her junior career.

Avram Sets CSU Single-Season Wins Record
Kateryna Avram returns for her senior season after posting a program record 27 singles wins last year. Avram, who joined the Vikings as a junior transfer prior to the 2018-19 campaign, broke the single-season record of 26 wins, which was set during the 2007-08 season. Avram picked up nine of her wins during #HLWTEN play, as she was the only league player to post a perfect 9-0 singles mark on the year.

Head Coach Frank Polito
The Vikings will be under the direction of second-year head coach Frank Polito, who led the Vikings to a 16-9 dual match record last season, marking one of their best records in recent years. Overall, this will be Polito's eighth year at Cleveland State after also serving as an associate head coach for the men's and women's programs.
