KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Cleveland State women's tennis team opened play at the WMU Super Challenge Friday, picking up a handful of doubles wins along with a pair of singles victories.
Kateryna Avram and Klara Mrcela led the way for the Vikings in doubles action, picking up two wins against a pair of Ball State teams, while Isabella Spindler and Blanche Lenoan and Gaby Schoenberg and Lara Prosenjak each recorded a doubles win on the first day of action.
"Our doubles play continues to improve, and I hope to see the same, if not better, production tomorrow," head coach Frank Polito said. "Klara and Kate have been playing some great doubles throughout the fall season, and that continued today. They are really starting to come together as a doubles team and playing to each other's strengths. Isabella and Blanche picked up a solid win against a Big Ten opponent today, and hopefully they can carry that momentum into tomorrow's matches."
In singles action, Spindler and Sian Payne picked up Cleveland State's two wins on the day, with Spindler posting a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Ball State's Victoria Sec and Payne earning a 7-5, 6-0 victory against Tereza Pilzova of Lewis.
"It was good to see Isabella back in the lineup today, and even more so that she was able to get a win and continue to improve. Although we weren't able to get as many wins as we would have liked during singles play, we were still able to play a lot of good points, which is promising for the rest of the weekend," Polito said.
Spindler's victory marked the 46th of her career, as she is now just four wins shy of becoming the 15th Viking all-time with 50 career victories.
Action at the WMU Super Challenge will continue tomorrow (Saturday, November 3), with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles.
