Women’s Tennis 2017-18 Season In Review

The Cleveland State women's tennis team posted a successful 2017-18 campaign, finishing in the top-three in the Horizon League standings for the ninth straight year and advancing to the #HLWTEN Semifinals for the 12th time in program history.

TEAM HONORS
• Cleveland State finished the year with a 7-2 Horizon League record,
recording 7+ wins in league play for the third straight year and seventh time overall under head coach Brian Etzkin.
• The Vikings advanced to the semifinals at the Horizon League Tournament, earning their 12th appearance in the semifinals over the last 16 years.
• Since opening the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion in 2016, the Vikings have posted an overall record of 23-8 in the MMTP,
including a 12-2 mark against #HLWTEN opponents.

INDIVIDUAL ACCOLADES
Aleksandra Golawska finished her career tied for seventh on the CSU Singles Wins List with 70 career victories,
and is one of eight Vikings all-time to reach the 70-win milestone.
Aleksandra Golawska also finished her time at Cleveland State ranked seventh on the CSU Doubles Wins List with 61 career doubles wins,
while she teamed up with Isabella Spindler to record 39 wins as a tandem – a mark that ranks them second on the All-Time Wins List.
Isabella Spindler eclipsed the 50-win mark in doubles play, finishing her junior campaign with 51 career doubles wins.
• Cleveland State was honored with seven Horizon League weekly accolades throughout the season – leading all league teams –
picking up four Singles Player of the Week accolades (Isabella Spindler 2, Aleksandra Golawska 1, Gaby Schoenberg 1)
and three Doubles Team of the Week honors (Golawska/Spindler 2, Schober/Schoenberg 1).

ALL-HORIZON LEAGUE HONORS
Isabella Spindler was named to the All-League First Team
after posting a 7-2 regular season record at No. 1 singles against #HLWTEN opponents.
Spindler finished the year with a team-best 19-15 singles record, including 13 wins during the spring season.

FALL SEASON
Isabella Spindler captured two singles titles during the fall season (Akron Shootout & Viking Invitational),
while Spindler and Aleksandra Golawska won the Viking Invitational doubles crown.
• Four Vikings earned a spot in the ITA Midwest Regional qualifying draw –
Isabella Spindler, Aleksandra Golawska, Jana Schober, and Gaby Schoenberg.

HEAD COACH BRIAN ETZKIN
• Brian Etzkin finished his 16th season at the helm of the Vikings, owning a 210-199 career record.
On February 9, 2018, Etzkin picked up his 200th career victory with the women's team, earning a 6-1 win against Oberlin.
With the win, Etzkin became one of just two league coaches to own 200+ wins at their current school.

ACADEMIC HONORS
• Senior Jana Schober was named to the seven-member Horizon League All-Academic Team,
carrying a 3.86 GPA while pursuing a degree in business and supply chain management.
