Cleveland State to Host Seventh Annual Magnus Cup

Cleveland State to Host Seventh Annual Magnus Cup

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams partake in their biggest in-season meet of the year this weekend as both programs host the seventh annual Magnus Cup.

The meet has grown significantly since its inception in 2012. There will be nine men's teams and a meet-record 16 women's teams competing this year. The 25 combined teams competing ties last year for the most in Magnus Cup history.

Three institutions will be making their Magnus Cup debuts—Delaware, Indiana State and Soka. It marks the first time that schools from states of Delaware, Indiana or California have been represented at this meet. Both Xavier programs and women's squads from Duquesne, Saint Francis (Pa.) and Youngstown State will continue their streak of competing in every iteration of the event.

A full schedule of events is listed at the bottom of this article. All traditional individual swimming events and relays will be held at the meet in addition to four non-traditional events (50 butterfly, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 100 IM). Both 1-meter and 3-meter diving will be held as well during the course of the weekend.

Swimming prelims will begin at 9:00 a.m. each day. Finals will commence at 5:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 3:00 p.m. Sunday. Diving is set to take place at 1:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday with preliminaries followed by finals. There will be A, B and C finals in men's individual swimming events and A, B, C and D finals in women's individual swimming events. The top 20 swimmers will score in each event in both genders. All relays and the 1650 freestyle will be contested as timed finals.

Live results from the meet will be available on the Meet Mobile app ($). Live results from the diving competition will be available through the DiveMeets website. Full results will be posted on the swimming pages of CSU's website at the end of each day of competition.

The Cleveland State men's team has won five of the previous six Magnus Cups, including each of the past four. The Vikings' 328-point margin of victory in 2017 was the largest in the history of the event. The CSU men topped Xavier in dual action earlier this season at home but fell to Miami (Ohio) in the squad's last action. Sophomore Dominik Niedzialek has the fastest time in the Horizon League this season in both backstroke events and the 1650 freestyle. Freshman Jack Krusinski owns the fastest times in the HL this season in both breaststroke events. Sophomore Matt Akers has surpassed the NCAA qualifying standard in both diving events this season.

The Cleveland State women's best finish at the Cup is second, which they have achieved twice. The Viking women were fourth of 15 teams last year, finishing a single point out of third place. CSU has gone 1-1-1 in dual action over the past four weekends, topping Youngstown State, tying Xavier and falling to Miami (Ohio). Despite battling an injury early on this season, senior Molly McNamara owns the fastest time in the League this season in the 200 butterfly and sits .02 seconds behind the fastest 100 fly time.

The following teams are scheduled to compete at the 2018 Magnus Cup: Akron (women only), Buffalo (women only), California University of Pennsylvania (women only), Cleveland State, University of the Cumberlands, Delaware, Duquesne (women only), Fairmont State, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Indiana State (women only), Saint Francis (Pa.) (women only), Simon Fraser, Soka University, West Virginia Tech, Xavier and Youngstown State (women only).

An all-weekend ticket for the Magnus Cup will be $30 for adults and $20 for seniors and children. An all-day ticket will be $12 for adults and $7 for seniors or children. Heat sheets will be available for $2 per session. CSU students will be admitted free with a valid Viking Card.
