Cleveland State Women's Soccer Signs Ten Players to Letter of Intents

Elise Boyd | Oregon, Wisc. | Oregon High School | Forward | SC Wave

  • Led Oregon HS to a Division 2 Wisconsin State Championship
  • Twice served as a team captain
  • Earned Second Team All-Conference honors and Honorable Mention All-Area recognition
  • Tallied 20 goals and eight assists as a junior,
  • Helped her team to a No. 1 ranking in the nation as a junior
  • A member of the Honor Roll every semester
  • Played for the SC Wave, leading them to four Wisconsin State Championships

Boyd on why she chose Cleveland State, "I chose Cleveland State because I really liked the downtown campus and what it offers. I also really liked the style of soccer that CSU plays and felt like it was a true positive team environment."

Coach Boyer on Boyd, "Elise is an athletic attacking player who does well in wide areas, able to drive at defenders off the dribble to either provide service into the box or cut in to create shooting opportunities for herself.  The ability to both serve a quality cross as well as shoot from distance provides the flexibility to play on either the right or left sides of an attack.  As a key contributor on both her high school and SC Wave club teams in Wisconsin she is consistently making big plays helping her teams to championship levels of success."

Olivia Cruz | Springfield, Va. | Annandale High School | Midfield | Fairfax Brave ECNL

  • Named to the 2022 National District First Team
  • Garnered team MVP honors during her senior season
  • Received 2021 Gunston District First Team recognition as a junior
  • Off the field, a member of the National Honor Society and National English Honor Society
  • Played for Fairfax Brave ECNL
  • Invited to the Washington Spirit Development Program Training in 2022
  • Earned ECNL Second Team Mid-Atlantic All-Conference honors in 2021-22

Cruz on why she chose Cleveland State, "I loved the location of the campus and the team culture. I also knew academics were important to me and when I saw that along with athletics being equally valued, I knew this was home."

Coach Boyer on Cruz, "Olivia is a very talented attacking player able to create dangerous situations in so many ways as a very dynamic dribbler, by seeing and executing final passes to put teammates thru, or with an ability to shoot from distance with either foot.  She's been productive while playing up age groups on her ECNL club team and while playing summer seasons against collegiate players, so I anticipate that her transition will be quick to have a similar impact here as well.  In addition to all the things that she brings in creating chances for her team around the box, it's equally impressive to see her willingness to put in the work defensively as well.  We are thrilled to add a player of Olivia's potential late to this already exciting class."

Taylor Demmerle | Strongsville, Ohio | Strongsville High School | Forward | FC Evolution

  • Led Strongsville to four Conference and District Championships
  • Guided the Mustangs to two Regional Championships, one State Championship, and one National Championship
  • Earned GCSSCA Honorable Mention honors
  • Off the field, earned three Scholar-Athlete honors
  • Played for FC Evolution, winning two State Championships and one Regional Championship

Demmerle on why she chose Cleveland State, "I chose Cleveland State because I love the atmosphere there. The coaches and team were very welcoming, and it definitely feels like home."

Coach Boyer on Demmerle, "Taylor is an excellent athlete that is immediately prepared for the speed of play at this level.  We have seen her move into defense at times when her club team has needed her there to deal with an opponent's best player or to utilize her ability to get forward from a defensive position.  We have seen her be an attacking threat able to run in behind an opponent's defense and drive at defenders at pace off the dribble.  All of those attributes likely set her up at this level to excel in similar wide areas either as an outside back or a wingback that is able to both defend the position in isolated space well and is also encouraged to get forward and join in the attack."

Kendall Fabery | Scottdale, Pa. | Southmoreland High School | Defender | Pittsburgh Riverhounds

  • A three-time All-Section and All-WPIAL honoree
  • Twice named to the Westmoreland County All-Star team
  • A four-year captain
  • Led her team to two Sectional Championships
  • Played for Pittsburgh Riverhounds Development Academy

Fabery on why she chose Cleveland State, "I chose Cleveland State because of the excellent academic and athletic opportunities that it offers student-athletes."

Coach Boyer on Fabery, "Kendall was the first player committed as we began building this 2023 recruiting class and she has really shown her full investment in becoming a Viking. Her decision to graduate early and begin with us this spring will give her a great jump start to that preparation for next fall. She's a very versatile defender that can play either centrally or out wide. She continues to show all of the tools that we are looking for as a strong on-ball defender, high intelligence to read the game and anticipate situations, athleticism to cover ground and match the physicality of the position at this level, and comfort on the ball to allow us to build possession out of the back thru her.

Gwen Jarosz | North Tonawanda, N.Y. | Niagara Wheatfield High School | Defender | WNY Flash

  • A three-time All-League center back
  • Played for WNY Flash, helping them to an ECNL Ohio Valley Conference Championship
  • Off the field, she received an achievement of excellence in math

Jarosz on why she chose Cleveland State, "Cleveland State has a great engineering program, and Coach Boyer was very welcoming when I came on my official visit."

Coach Boyer on Jarosz, "Gwen is a central defender that is looking forward to the physicality required of the position at the Division 1 level. She is a true defender at heart and enjoys battling and competing against the opponent's best attackers. In on-ball situations and 1v1 defender, she excels and has been dominant at times in games against some of the best in the country. As we've watched her continued development, she's now adding to that growth in understanding the off-ball moments as a center back to anticipate moments and provide cover for teammates and becoming more comfortable on the ball in building up possession from the back."

Grace Koski | Northville, Mich. | Northville High School | Midfielder | Michigan Jaguars FC

  • Earned KLAA Conference honors as a junior and senior
  • As a senior, led Northville to Divisional, Conference, District, and Regional Championships
  • Part of the 2022 MHSAA State runner-up team
  • A two-year captain for her squad
  • Played for Michigan Jaguars FC, winning back-to-back State Championships
  • In 2022, her club team finished as Regional Semifinalists and won the National Championship
  • Off the field, twice earned KLAA Scholar-Athlete honors and was a member of the National Honor Society

Koski on why she chose Cleveland State, "CSU has the perfect balance for me between a high-level soccer program and for my major in special education. The team atmosphere is like a family and I can't wait to be a part of it."

Coach Boyer on Koski, "Grace is a central midfielder that connects the back players in defense with the players in attack and as a result, serves as the "glue".  With her club team, she served the important role of providing defensive coverage which allowed the attacking players to push forward and get in the proper areas to excel. She does well in winning the ball and pushing the team in transition and is often responsible for the second assist that doesn't always show up in the box score."

Brooke Opferman | Pittsburgh, Pa. | Peters Township High School | Midfielder | Beadling SC

  • A three-time All-Section, All-WIPAL, and Big 56 First Team honoree
  • Named a Pittsburgh Soccer Now Player to Watch on three occasions
  • Twice Nominated for the Moe Rosensteel Player of the Year award
  • Served as the team captain during her senior year
  • Named Observer-Reporter Best player in her final season
  • Recognized on the Honor Roll all four years and was a member of the National Honors Society
  • Played for Beadling SC, named Great Lake Premier 1 Division Best XI player in 2019
  • Invited to the US Soccer Training Center in 2016

Opferman on why she chose Cleveland State, "The opportunity to get a great education while continuing to play soccer made it an easy choice for me. I look forward to getting on campus in the Fall."

Coach Boyer on Opferman, "Brooke is a very versatile central midfielder that excels in any role that you put her in. She is a strong athlete that we know can be an asset defensively in covering ground and winning challenges, while also building up play through the midfield. As a well-rounded athlete who can fill a variety of roles on either end of the midfield, Brooke has the opportunity to help us in different ways as she continues to develop at this level."

Madison Sievering | Loveland, Ohio | Summit Country Day | Forward | Ohio Elite ECNL

  • Named the 2022 Southwest Player of the Year
  • A two-time All-Southwest First Team honoree
  • Twice named the MVC Player of the Year
  • Received two All-MVC First Team selections and one Second Team honor
  • Off the field, part of the African American National Recognition program
  • Played for Ohio Elite Soccer Academy U19 ECNL
  • Qualified for the Champions League in 2022 and won the North American Cup in 2021

Sievering on why she chose Cleveland State, "I chose Cleveland State because of the caring coaching staff, as well as for the many academic opportunities."

Coach Boyer on Sievering, "Madison has a real feel for getting herself into dangerous situations and scoring goals consistently at the highest competition levels with her Ohio Elite ECNL team.  She's a dynamic athlete with break-away sprinter's speed making her a constant threat to get behind a defense.  Her addition provides another attacking player to our group that will create more dangerous opportunities in transition for Madi and others to take advantage of."

Carly Stinson | Loveland, Ohio | Milford High School | Defender | Cincinnati United Premier GA

  • Named an All-ECC player on multiple occasions
  • Led Milford to a District Championship in her first year playing high school soccer
  • Off the field, a four-time High Honors student
  • Played for Cincinnati United Premier GA
  • Helped the club to a Girls Academy National Final Four appearance

Stinson on why she chose Cleveland State, "I chose Cleveland State because it offers great academic opportunities and programs within my career path. From the athletic perspective, the coaching staff is amazing and truly cares about their players both on and off the field to create a competitive environment where I can grow as a player and a person."

Coach Boyer on Stinson, "Carly has played so many different roles for her teams over the last few years and can continue to fill in a variety of different positions for us as well.  Her athleticism and speed have allowed her to excel as a wide player at the club level, able to either play as an outside back or to push forward more and get into an attack and provide service from wide areas.  This past high school season she moved inside and played center mid and helped lead her team to a serious state championship run and excelled at that position as well.  So, we've seen her now play almost every position in defense and in midfield at a very productive level against strong competition and are excited at adding that versatility to our group to see which role best fits Carly at this level."

Victoria Zappasodi | Cincinnati, Ohio | Seton High School | Midfielder | Kings Hammer ECNL

  • Earned Academic All-Southwest honors
  • Part of the Leadership Honors Program and Spanish NHS
  • Played for Kings Hammer ECNL

Zappasodi on why she chose Cleveland State, "I chose CSU because I felt like I belonged here from the beginning. The University has incredible academic resources that I want to be a part of. Also, the people and the environment made it feel like a second home and the coaches were people I wanted as my coaches and people that I admired for their loyalty through the process."

Coach Boyer on Zappasodi, "Victoria is a versatile attacking player that can serve as a forward or attacking midfielder. She is excellent at finding pockets of space for herself in front of the opponent's back line and creating dangerous chances for herself and her teammates. Some of our other current attacking players who excel at making runs and getting in behind a defense should enjoy connecting with V whose passing ability will find them in more dangerous situations."
