CLEVELAND, Ohio - Five student-athletes from the Cleveland State women's golf team were named Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholars, as announced by the organization today.
Earning spots on the team are seniors Sophie Kelner and Emily Turski, sophomore Kaylee Neumeister and freshmen Amanda Baker and Ashley Knight.
Kelner had an 81.9 scoring average this year an capped her career with an 80.9 scoring average, the fourth best in school history. She received the Ms. Viking Award at the VESPYS, which is presented to the CSU senior that represent what it means to be the ultimate Viking. In addition, Kelner received the John and Sandra Konstantinos's Scholarship, which is presented to the student-athlete who best reflects and embodies the virtues of former CSU Director of Athletics John Konstantinos, including leadership, integrity, perseverance, loyalty and humility.
She had a 3.66 GPA as a Film and TV major.
Turski, who sports a 3.76 GPA as a Health Sciences major, had an 81.3 scoring average this year, including a career-low round of 74 at the Grand Canyon Invitational.
A second team All-Horizon League selection, Neumeister earned a spot on the WGCA team with a 3.56 GPA as a Chemical Engineering major. She ranked second on the team with a 78.8 average and she will enter her junior year with the top scoring average in program history (78.4).
Baker concluded her first year with a 4.00 GPA as a Middle Childhood Education major and posted an 80.2 average on the course. Her best finish was a tie for 18th at the Shirley Spork Invitational, including a first round 74, her best round of the season.
Knight sports a 3.85 GPA as a Health Sciences major and had an 80.8 average. She won the John Carroll Invitational with rounds of 73-80 (153) as an individual.
A total of 1,011 women's collegiate golfers were recognized with this prestigious honor. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics, including a minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50.
Cleveland State finished third at the Horizon League Championship this year, one of four top-three finishes this season, which included a pair of runner-up showings. In addition, the Vikings set the single season scoring record with a 316.0 average, breaking last year's old mark by more than one shot.
