Clint Musser

Clint Musser will be entering his third season at Cleveland State but first as the associate head coach.

During the 2020-21 shortened season, Musser helped three Vikings to the NCAA Championships. Cleveland State finished in sixth place at the MAC championship, which they have done in each of its first two years in the MAC.

Off the mat, nine members of the team were named to the Mid-American Conference All-Academic Team. This marked the highest number of honorees on the All-Academic team in program history, while being one of four teams with at least nine honorees. In addition, Cleveland State came in third in the NWCA's annual Top-30 Scholar All-American team standings – the highest ranking in recent history – after posting a 3.5331 team GPA at the time of nomination.

Musser’s first season on staff saw the Vikings demonstrate significant signs of progress as the program had one of its best seasons in recent memory.

The 2019-20 season was capped in style with seven Vikings placing at the Mid-American Conference Championships, five of whom outpaced their seed. As a result, Musser helped Cleveland State to finish in the top half of the team standings at the event despite CSU being tabbed to finish dead last in the final pre-championship coaches' rankings. Cleveland State also had the highest finish of any of the MAC schools in Ohio.

Musser helped have the Vikings wrestling their best at the most important time of the season. Cleveland State, which started three true freshmen and a redshirt freshman, led the MAC in largest seed-place difference at the 2020 league championship.

Northern Ohio native Evan Cheek led the way for the 2019-20 Vikings. With Musser’s guidance, Cheek was named an Honorable Mention All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Cheek had earned a top-16 seed for the NCAA Championships at 141 pounds after registering a 36-5 record on the season, including 18 bonus-point wins.

Musser helped the Vikings to a noticeable improvement in dual format as well in 2019-20. Cleveland State’s nine wins tied its total from the previous three seasons combined and were its highest such total in 13 years. The Vikings posted their highest conference win total in over 15 years, including a come-from-behind win over local rival Kent State, CSU’s first victory over the Golden Flashes since the 2003-04 season.

Musser, a two-time All-American at Penn State in his collegiate days, returned to his northeast Ohio roots upon joining CSU after he spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach at American University.

"Clint has the coaching experience and wrestling credentials to make an immediate impact in our program," Moore said at the time of Musser's hiring. "He will assist with our vision of adding the top recruits from northeast Ohio with his relationships and connections."

Musser helped American to one of its most successful seasons in recent history, on and off the mat, in 2018-19.

The Eagles posted their best dual winning percentage in eight seasons with their 7-4 mark while American's 75.5 points at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships were its most in seven seasons. American finished second in Division I in team grade point average, its best such finish since 2011, while its 3.56 figure was the program's best since that academic metric was tracked.

During the 2017-18 season, Musser helped the Eagles send five wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, the first such occurrence for the program in six years. Over his first two seasons with the Eagles, he helped American have 12 combined EIWA placewinners, including David Terao, who earned NCAA All-American honors, the first-ever for American at 125 pounds.

Prior to American, Musser spent the three previous seasons in northeast Ohio, including a stint at Cleveland State in 2014-15.

With the Vikings, Musser helped the program to a 7-3 dual mark, a pair of NCAA qualifiers and the program's best finish at the EWL Championships in 11 years.

Musser served as a volunteer assistant at Kent State in what was his first collegiate coaching stint. Over the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, he helped two Golden Flashes claim All-America honors, including one who was named MAC Wrestler of the Year in 2013, while helping the team to 21 dual wins.

Musser began his coaching career as an assistant coach at both Massillon Perry HS and Walsh Jesuit HS, helping guide nine wrestlers to individual state championships and four wrestlers to high school national titles. He also helped lead his teams to top-five finishes at the state tournament in all seven of his seasons as an assistant coach.

As a team captain at Penn State, Musser was an NCAA runner-up at 157 pounds as a senior in 1999. He was a three-time NCAA qualifier, placing in the top three at the Big Ten tournament in three straight seasons. He also earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and was selected to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic Team. Musser won 123 matches for the Nittany Lions, ranking among the top 10 in career victories.

A graduate of Walsh Jesuit High School, Musser earned a Bachelor's degree from Penn State in 1999.
