Vikings Add Four More, Including Three Transfers

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Head coach Josh Moore of the Cleveland State University wrestling team announced Monday that four student-athletes have formally committed to continue their careers with the Vikings.

Three of the four are transfers who previously attended Division I schools while the Vikings also added another high school commit with this announcement. Three of the four are northern Ohio natives, as two of the three transfers are returning to their home state after previously attending out-of-state institutions.

Joey Caprella (Old Dominion University), Caleb Graber (West Virginia University), Jake Manley (Otsego High School) and Marcus Robinson (University at Buffalo) all committed to the program recently and will join CSU for the 2020-21 academic year.

Caprella redshirted as a true freshman at Old Dominion this past season, posting an 11-12 mark in the process. He placed at the Appalachian State Open while competing at 149 pounds. Caprella was a two-time OHSAA state placer for Lima Central Catholic at 145 pounds, including finishing third as a senior in 2019. He won a pair of Troy District and Lima Central Catholic Sectional titles and left the Thunderbird program as the all-time leader in wins. Caprella will have four years of eligibility remaining with the Vikings.

Graber also redshirted as a true freshman at West Virginia this past season, picking up five wins at 125 pounds in the first semester of competition. He was a Division I state placer at 132 pounds for Green High School at the 2019 OHSAA Tournament. Graber also qualified for the DI state tournament as a junior and was a two-time Massillon Perry Sectional champion who combined for 70 wins over his final two scholastic seasons. Graber will have four years of eligibility remaining with the Vikings.

Manley joins CSU after a highly successful career at Otsego High School in which he was a four-time state qualifier. Manley was 47-0 at 120 pounds in his shortened senior season as he was primed for the OHSAA Tournament coming off Oak Harbor Sectional and Napoleon District titles. He placed third at the 2019 OHSAA Tournament at 113 pounds as his lone loss in the event came to the eventual state champion by a single point. Manley qualified for the state tournament at 106 pounds in both his freshman and sophomore seasons. He finished his career with three sectional titles, two district championships and 163 career wins.

Robinson spent the past two seasons at Buffalo and showed promise despite his youth. He placed seventh at 141 pounds at the 2020 MAC Championships, tallying three wins at the event despite entering unseeded. He was the highest placing freshman or sophomore in his weight class. Robinson went 18-12 on the season, including a mark of 6-4 in MAC dual action. He redshirted in his first season with the Bulls and racked up 22 wins while competing unattached. Robinson was a four-time state champion for Arkansas City High School, winning each title at a different weight class. He was named the 2018 Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association 4A Wrestler of the Year after notching his fourth state title and helping the Bulldogs to the team state championship. He racked up 177 wins in his high school career. Robinson will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Vikings.

Seven Vikings placed at the 2020 MAC Championships in March, with five outpacing their seed. As a result, Cleveland State finished in the top half of the team standings at the event after being tabbed to finish last in the final pre-championship coaches' rankings. Cleveland State's nine dual wins were its highest such figure in 13 years.
