Cleveland State Set for Busy Sunday

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University wrestling team continues action this weekend with a pair of duals in two different locations on the same day.

CSU will host Otterbein Sunday, Dec. 9, at Noon in what will be the first home action under first-year head coach Josh Moore. After hosting the Cardinals, the Vikings will make the short trip east to face John Carroll in a dual slated for 3:00 p.m.

This will be the Vikings' second day of dual competition this season. CSU competed in a quad dual at Bucknell nearly a month ago, picking up a win over VMI and suffering setbacks to Buffalo and the host Bison.

Cleveland State was last in action last weekend as it competed at the inaugural Cougar Clash hosted by SIUE. Six Vikings placed at the event, which featured three nationally ranked teams.

Senior John Vaughn placed for the second straight event last time out, as he also placed at the Navy Classic, both at 165 pounds. He collected wins over opponents from Chattanooga, Arizona State, Kent State and SIUE last time out. Vaughn owns nine wins on the season.

Redshirt senior Armando Torres placed at 133 pounds last weekend and moved his season record to 12-5 in the process. Redshirt sophomore Nico O'Dor also placed at the Cougar Clash to reach double-digit wins on the season at 157 pounds.

Cleveland State will be facing Otterbein for the first time in program history.

Unlike the Cardinals, CSU has a long history with JCU. Cleveland State will be facing John Carroll in a dual meet for the 35th consecutive season when the teams take the mat. CSU is 42-4-2 all-time against the Blue Streaks in a series that dates back to 1964-65. The Vikings have won 19 consecutive matches against John Carroll, including a 35-12 win last season. Redshirt sophomore Cameron Lathem, senior Sam Matzek, junior Collin Kelly and sophomores John Kelbly and Georgio Poullas, the latter two of whom are redshirting this season, are among the Vikings that took home wins against JCU last season.

Otterbein is 4-5 on the season entering the weekend and will compete in a tri-dual Saturday before facing CSU. The Cardinals also won the Star City Open on the weekend before Thanksgiving. Juniors Corbin Bunsold (16-0) and Drew Kasper (13-0) are both undefeated at 197 and 285 pounds, respectively.

John Carroll is 6-1 on the season and is coming off a second-place finish at the RIT Invitational, which featured 16 teams. Senior Jarrad Lasko leads the team with 17 wins at 149 pounds and is among the top-20 at JCU in career wins.

Cleveland State will stay at home next weekend to host the 14th annual Cleveland State Open Saturday, Dec. 15.
