Wrestling 2017-18 Season in Review

Below are highlights and notes from the 2017-18 Cleveland State University wrestling season:

  • Junior Evan Cheek made his NCAA Championships debut just down the street from campus at Quicken Loans Arena and faced two-time defending national champion Dean Heil of Oklahoma State in his opening bout.
  • It marked the fourth consecutive season, and fifth in six years, in which at least one Viking competed at the NCAA Championships.
  • Despite being seeded third, Cheek won the EWL title at 141 pounds with a pair of pins sandwiched around a nail-biting, sudden-victory win.
  • As a result, Cheek was named Outstanding Wrestler of the EWL Championships. He became just the third Viking ever to win that honor and the first in 35 years.
  • Cheek defeated Brock Zacherl, an undefeated, top-five opponent, via first-period pin in the EWL championship bout.
  • Cheek finished with 24 wins on the season, 16 of the bonus-point variety, including eight pins.
  • Nick Corba, who was battling an eye injury sustained during the event, placed fourth at the EWL meet, dropping a pair of matches in sudden-victory sessions.
  • Corba picked up 24 wins on the season, 14 of the bonus-point variety, including seven pins.
  • True freshman Georgio Poullas placed fourth at the EWL meet, dropping his two bouts by a combined six points.
  • Poullas was joined by classmate John Kelbly and redshirt freshman Ryan Ford in making their EWL Championship debuts after each reached double digit wins during the regular season.
  • Ford and Poullas both went 3-3 in EWL dual action in their first season in the League.
  • John Vaughn won 13 matches across two weight classes during the season.
  • Caleb Stockmaster won 21 matches on the season at 174 pounds.
  • Colton Carroll notched seven pins in 25 matches wrestled on the season at 174 pounds.
  • Evan Cheek was named EWL Wrestler of the Week Feb. 5 after posting a pair of road dual wins the weekend prior, including one over a top-25 foe.
  • After losing at George Mason in the 2016-17 season, the Vikings used five bonus-point wins to take down the Patriots, 29-18, in EWL action Jan. 27.
  • Evan Cheek defeated three Big Ten foes en route to the title at the Purple Raider Open Jan. 14. He was one of four Vikings to knock off a Big Ten opponent at the event.
  • Evan Cheek placed at the Southern Scuffle while Nick Corba and Caleb Stockmaster also advanced to the second day of competition.
  • It marked the second straight season in which a Viking was the only unseeded wrestler to place at his weight class at the Scuffle.
  • Caleb Stockmaster won the Storm Open Dec. 3 by posting a 5-0 record at 174 pounds.
  • Cleveland State took down Northern Illinois, 28-12, notching its first win over the Huskies in seven tries.

  • Redshirt freshman Cameron Lathem, making his dual debut as a Viking, posted a victory over his Ohio State foe at 125 pounds at the Throwdown event.
  • Six Vikings placed at the EMU Open Nov. 11, as John Kelbly won the Freshman/Sophomore title with three bonus-point wins.
  • Nick Corba was ranked among the top 20 by multiple outlets in advance of the 2017-18 season.
