Men’s Tennis Set For Matchup Against Butler

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team will begin a three-match roadswing this weekend, traveling to Butler for a 10:00 a.m. contest on Friday, February 12.

Phillips & Mostardi Earn #HLMTEN Weekly Honors
Last week, Cleveland State's No. 1 doubles team of Luke Phillips and Nico Mostardi picked up the first weekly honor of the season for the Vikings, as they were named the #HLMTEN Doubles Team of the Week (February 3). Phillips and Mostardi went 2-0 at the top of the doubles lineup against Ball State last time out, helping the Vikings pick up the doubles point in both matches. With the wins, Mostardi moved into sole possession of eighth place on the CSU Doubles Wins List with 68 career doubles victories.

Phillips Goes 2-0 Against Ball State
Luke Phillips also posted a perfect 2-0 singles record against Ball State last time out, as he picked up back-to-back wins at No. 2 singles. Phillips earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the first match and then earned a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 win in the weekend finale. Phillips finished the weekend with 66 career singles wins, and is just shy of earning a spot on the CSU Singles Wins List. 

Mareschal-Hay Picks Up First Collegiate Singles Win
Last time out, freshman Maxime Mareschal-Hay picked up his first collegiate singles win, earning a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(4) three-set victory at No. 4 singles against Ball State. Mareschal-Hay has appeared in the singles lineup in all three matches for the Vikings so far this season, playing at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots.

Mostardi & Terry On CSU Singles Wins List
Entering the weekend, Nico Mostardi and Matthew Terry are both featured on the CSU Singles Wins List – Mostardi ranking fourth with 85 career victories and Terry ranking eighth with 77 wins on his career. Mostardi is one of just four Vikings to reach the 85-win mark, while Terry is one of just eight Vikings with 75+ singles wins.

Mostardi & Santilli Return For Super-Senior Seasons
After being granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA after having the 2019-20 season cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the senior duo of Nico Mostardi and Jack Santilli have decided to return for a 'super-senior' season. Throughout their Cleveland State careers, this duo has led the Vikings to 52 dual match victories and two Horizon League Tournament titles. 

Vikings Post Strong Semester In The Classroom
With the 2020 Fall Semester in the books, the Vikings posted one of their best semesters in program history, finishing with a 3.779 Team GPA for the term. In addition, four Vikings earned a spot on the Cleveland State University Dean's List (JuandeDios Abboud, Luke Phillips, Jack Sasntilli, Austin Staiger), while Matthew Terry and Maxime Mareschal-Hay were named to the Cleveland State University President's List. 

Mostardi Earns Oracle ITA Preseason Ranking
For the third straight year, Nico Mostardi is featured in the Oracle ITA National Singles Rankings, as he came in at No. 91 in this year's preseason rankings. Last year, Mostardi spent the entire shortened campaign ranked in the top-100, and finished the year ranked No. 93. Mostardi's highest career ranking came after the 2019 fall season when he was ranked No. 65.

Head Coach Brian Etzkin
Brian Etzkin is in his 19th year at the helm of the Vikings, owning a 259-187 dual match record. During his tenure, Etzkin has led the Vikings to seven Horizon League Tournament titles and seven trips in the NCAA Tournament.
