Men’s Tennis Returns To Action Against Western Michigan & Purdue

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team will return to action with a pair of matches this week, hosting Western Michigan on Wednesday, February 26 and traveling to Purdue on Sunday, March 1.

Last Time Out…
The Vikings were last in action on February 14 and February 15, when they dropped a pair of hard fought 4-3 matches at Ball State and Valparaiso. The Vikings, who were playing with a shorthanded lineup, were closing out a four-match roadswing with these two matches.

Vikings At The MMTP
Wednesday's match against Western Michigan will mark the fourth of 11 home matches for the Vikings this season, as they currently own a perfect 3-0 record at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion so far this year. All-time, the Vikings own a 29-10 record at the MMTP, and have won seven straight home matches dating back to last spring.

Mostardi & Phillips Named #HLMTEN Doubles Team Of The Week
After posting a 2-0 record at the top of the doubles lineup against Ball State and Valparaiso last time out, the Cleveland State duo of Nico Mostardi and Luke Phillips was named the Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week. Mostardi & Phillips posted matching 6-4 victories at No. 1 doubles in both contests, and now own a team-best 8-4 record, including a 6-4 mark this spring.

So far this season the Vikings have collected three Singles Player of the Week honors and four Doubles Team of the Week accolades, leading the league in both categories. All three Singles Player of the Week honors have come from Nico Mostardi, while Matthew Terry and Kade Mindry have picked up three Doubles Team of the Week honors and Mostardi and Luke Phillips earned the final Doubles Team of the Week accolade.

Mostardi & Terry On CSU Singles Wins List
After the first six weeks of the 2020 spring season, senior Nico Mostardi and junior Matthew Terry continue to move up the CSU Singles Wins List, as Mostardi enters the week ranked fourth with 83 career victories and Terry currently ranks eighth with 75 wins on his career. Mostardi needs just four more wins to move into third place, while Terry needs five more victories to move into seventh place. 

Phillips Notches 60th Career Singles Win
After picking up a pair of wins at No. 3 singles against Ball State and Valparaiso last time out, junior Luke Phillips eclipsed the 60-win mark for his career, entering the week with 61 total victories. Phillips is the 13th Viking all-time to reach the milestone, and is now the third active Viking to achieve the feat. 

Head Coach Brian Etzkin
Brian Etzkin is in his 18th year at the helm of the Vikings, owning a 256-182 dual match record. Last year, Etzkin guided the Vikings to their seventh Horizon League Tournament title and seventh trip to the NCAA Tournament, while helping the team earn the highest regional ranking in program history.
