Former Viking Joe VanMeter Picks Up ATP Tour Point

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Former Cleveland State men's tennis standout Joe VanMeter earned his first ATP Tour Point earlier this week, picking up a Main Draw win at the Bolivia F1 15K Futures event.

"There are a lot of good tennis players out there, and the competition is tough at all of the ATP Tour events, so to finally be able to win a main draw match is just awesome," VanMeter said. "I have made some main draws in singles and doubles, but I was always one round short of getting any points in the past. This time I was able to get a main draw victory over a very talented opponent in Augustin."

VanMeter, who played for the Vikings from 2012-2016, picked up a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Augustin Eduardo Cuellar Lorberg – a local Bolivian junior – in his Main Draw First Round match.

"Heading into this event I felt really good because I had just won another event in Evansville (Indiana), so I was on a roll and felt like I was playing some high quality tennis. Leading up to the Bolivia F1 15K Futures event, I changed my usual playing schedule for the summer, which I think allowed me to have success here," VanMeter said.

To earn a spot in the Bolivia F1 15K Futures Main Draw, VanMeter had to advance through the qualifying draw, where he went 3-0 to earn one of eight advancing spots out of the 64-player qualifying draw.

VanMeter bowed out of the tournament in the Second Round, following a loss to the No. 4 overall seed.

"I am very proud of Joe and the work he has put into his tennis, he was one of the hardest workers on the team while here at Cleveland State and that work ethic and love of the game has paid off as Joe has checked another goal off of his list," Cleveland State men's tennis head coach Brian Etzkin said. "I can't wait to see Joe set and achieve new goals on and off the court in the near future and beyond. Congrats from me, the team, and your extended Viking Family here at Cleveland State!"

VanMeter is the third Cleveland State men's tennis player to earn an ATP Tour Point, joining Phil Orno (2007-10) and Manuel Bellutti (2014-15).
