Men's Tennis 2017-18 Season In Review

For the first time since 2013 the Cleveland State men's tennis team returned to the top of the Horizon League, as the Vikings captured their sixth #HLMTEN Tournament title after earning a share of their fifth Regular Season Horizon League championship.

2018 #HLMTEN CHAMPIONS
• The Vikings finished the regular season with a 6-1 league record, clinching a share of their fifth Horizon League Regular Season title.
• As the No. 2 seed in the Horizon League Tournament, Cleveland State picked up a 4-0 victory over No. 3 Youngstown State in the semifinals,
and then defeated top-seeded Detroit Mercy, 4-2 in the championship match.
• This marked the sixth #HLMTEN Tournament title for the Vikings, and the first since 2013.
• Cleveland State now leads all current Horizon League schools with the five regular season and six tournament titles. 

TEAM HONORS
• Cleveland State finished the season with a 17-11 record, marking the sixth 17-win season under head coach Brian Etzkin.
• The Vikings made their sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, falling at No. 15 Michigan in the First Round.
• Overall this season, Cleveland State recorded 143 singles wins, the second highest single-season total under head coach Brian Etzkin.
• In regular season league matches only, the Vikings picked up a program-best 35 singles wins.
• Cleveland State posted an 11-1 record at the MMTP during the spring season, tying the record for most home wins in a single season.

INDIVIDUAL ACCOLADES
Mirko Radosevic and Benjamin Slade both joined the 50-win club,
as Radosevic finished his Cleveland State career with 54 wins and Slade finished the season with 60 career singles victories.
Benjamin Slade finished the year tied for ninth on the CSU Singles Wins List with his 60 career victories,
and is one of just 10 Vikings all-time to reach the 60-win plateau.
• For the third time under head coach Brian Etzkin four Vikings notched 20+ wins in the same season,
as Nico Mostardi (28 wins), Matthew Terry (28), Luke Phillips (27), and Benjamin Slade (24) all achieved the feat.
Nico Mostardi became the fastest Viking to reach the 20-win mark in a single-season,
while Matthew Terry became the fastest freshman to achieve the 20-win feat.
• Three Vikings finished the year ranked in the top-10 on the CSU Single-Season Wins List,
as Nico Mostardi and Matthew Terry finished tied for second with 28 wins and Luke Phillips finished sixth with 27 singles victories.
Mirko Radosevic finished his career tied for ninth on the CSU Doubles Wins List with 60 career doubles wins,
while he and Benjamin Slade finished tied for sixth with 23 career doubles wins as a tandem.
• Cleveland State was honored with eight Horizon League weekly accolades throughout the season – leading all league teams –
picking up six Singles Player of the Week accolades (Nico Mostardi 5, Luke Phillips 1)
and two Doubles Team of the Week honors (Mostardi/Terry 1, Radosevic/Terry 1).

ALL-HORIZON LEAGUE HONORS
Nico Mostardi was named the Player of the Year and earned a spot on the All-League First Team
after posting a league-best 6-1 record at No. 1 singles against #HLMTEN opponents.
Mostardi finished the season with a team and league-best 28-7 overall record.
Matthew Terry was named the Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-League Second Team
after notching a 6-1 league record at No. 2 singles as the only #HLMTEN rookie to play the entire league slate in the top-two singles spots.
For the season, Terry recorded a 28-11 singles record, leading all league freshmen.
Luke Phillips earned a spot on the All-League Second Team after posting a perfect 7-0 record against league opponents at No. 3 singles.

FALL SEASON
• Throughout three fall tournaments, the Vikings captured three singles titles and three doubles titles,
including Main Draw singles titles from Matthew Terry (Purdue Invitational) and Nico Mostardi (Viking Invitational),
and Main Draw doubles titles from Nico Mostardi/Luke Phillips (Purdue Invitational) and Nico Mostardi/Matthew Terry (Viking Invitational).
• Cleveland State had three players earn spots in the ITA Midwest Regional Main Singles Draw,
with Matthew Terry earning an automatic bid and Nico Mostardi and Luke Phillips advancing through the Qualifying Draw.
Matthew Terry advanced to the Main Draw Round of 16 at the ITA Midwest Regional – becoming the first ever Viking to achieve the feat.

HEAD COACH BRIAN ETZKIN
• Brian Etzkin finished his 16th season at the helm of the Vikings, owning a 234-170 career record.
As the all-time winningest coach in program history, Etzkin has now guided the Vikings to six #HLMTEN Tournament titles
and is the only league coach to record 200+ wins at their current school.

ACADEMIC HONORS
• Sophomore Nico Mostardi was named to the six-member Horizon League All-Academic Team,
carrying a 3.85 GPA while pursuing a degree in business and marketing.
