Six Vikings Named Academic All-League

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Six members of the Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams were named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team as announced by the league Thursday afternoon.

The CSU men and the Viking women had three honorees each, with the men's figure tying for the HL lead.

Sophomore Jack Krusinski and juniors Timothy Kubacki and Dominik Niedzialek were the Viking men to earn the honor.

Juniors Erica Henrichsen, Lexie Kostelnik and Irena Weclawiak earned the award for the CSU women.

Each Viking male student-athlete recognized has a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.70 while each female Viking honored has a cumulative GPA of at least 3.80.

Henrichsen, a journalism and promotional communication major, leads the group with a 4.00 cumulative mark.

All six Vikings that were honored scored in the Horizon League Championships last month.

All five swimmers honored placed in the top 10 in all three of their individual events while Henrichsen was among the top 12 in both diving events. Four of the five Viking swimmers honored had at least one top-four individual finish.

Kubacki, who claimed this honor for the second time, won both the 200 IM and 400 IM at the Horizon League Championships, winning the latter in school record time. He was one of three male athletes at the meet to accumulate at least 55 points as an individual.

Niedzialek, who earned this honor for the second time, was the 100 backstroke champion at the 2020 league meet while posting an NCAA qualifying time. He also broke the school record in the 200 back while taking runner-up honors.

Krusinski was a three-time HL Swimmer of the Week and finished among the top four in both breaststroke events at the league championships.

Henrichsen and Kostelnik joined their two male teammates in earning this honor for the second time. Kostelnik placed among the top five in the both the 500 free and 1650 free at the HL meet.

Weclawiak had a breakout league championship meet by placing among the top 10 in all three individual events for the first time in her career. She also swam on a trio of relays for CSU at the meet.

The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with Academic All-League honors in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.

Four of the Viking swimmers honored are continuing their seasons this weekend as Cleveland State hosts the National Invitational Championships.
