Vikings Begin Busy Week by Hosting Redhawks

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams begin the second half of their seasons this week with a busy competition calendar.

CSU begins the week by hosting its first home dual of the season Tuesday, Jan. 7, against Miami (Ohio), a late addition to the Vikings' schedule. Tuesday's dual will begin at 1:00 p.m.

Both CSU programs have not competed since hosting the Magnus Cup in late November.

The Viking men won their home invitational for the sixth year running as six different Vikings won at least one individual event. Dominik Niedzialek, who won three individual events, and Matt Akers, who swept both boards, were subsequently named HL Swimmer and Diver of the Week. Niedzialek owns the fastest 500 free time in the league this season while Akers has the top score on both diving boards.

The CSU women took third place at the Magnus Cup, their highest finish at the event in six years. A pair of newcomers, Sule van der Merwe and Emma Kerro, both reset school records during the meet, with the former doing so in the 200 back and the latter in 3-meter diving. Junior Alana Cartwright won the 100 breaststroke at the meet while classmate Lexie Kostelnik won the mile and was the runner-up in the 500 freestyle.

Both CSU squads dropped duals at Miami last season. That dual was the first meeting between the schools in four seasons on the men's side and was the first meeting on the women's side in over a decade.

Miami has been off from action for exactly a month as both squads took second while hosting the Miami Invitational in the first week of December. CSU faced off against the RedHawks in the Akron Zips Classic earlier this year, with the Miami men winning the invitational and women taking second. The RedHawk men are 0-4 on the year in dual action while the women are 1-6.

Cleveland State will be right back in action this weekend as it competes in a Horizon League tri-dual hosted by UIC that also features IUPUI.
