CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving programs each led the way in selections to the Horizon League's All-Academic Teams announced by the League Monday afternoon.
The CSU men had a League-high seven selections while the Viking women paced the League with five selections.
Sophomore DJ Arslanian, juniors MacJilton Lewis, Sean Mulvin, Curtis Roden and Jared Stergar, sophomore Tyler Stevenson and senior Grant Wethington were the Viking men to earn the honor.
Juniors Morgan Massie, Molly McNamara, Cassandra Oltman, senior Jamie VanDewerker and junior Claudia Zido earned the award for the CSU women.
Each Viking male student-athlete recognized has a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50 while each female Viking honored has a cumulative GPA of at least 3.70.
VanDewerker leads the group with a 3.98 mark while McNamara is not far behind with a 3.95 average.
All 12 Vikings that were honored scored in at least one individual event at the Horizon League Championships while 10 of the 12 placed among the top eight in one such event. The 12 Vikings combined to score in 31 individual events.
Three of the aforementioned Vikings broke school records in individual events and swam on record-breaking relay teams. Two other Vikings recognized contributed to record-breaking relay squads. Three additional Vikings honored posted a NCAA qualifying standard during the Championships.
McNamara was named the League's Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Year, just the second female Viking to earn the honor. She posted school records in all three individual events she swam and won both butterfly events in NCAA 'B' cut times. She also helped both CSU medley relay teams break school records.
Oltman was on the record-breaking 200 medley relay team and also broke school records in both backstroke events during the Championships. She had a trio of top-six individual finishes at the meet.
VanDewerker now owns the school record in the 100 backstroke after the Championships and also swam on two record-breaking relay teams. She posted a trio of top-five individual finishes.
Zido was on the 800 free relay team that broke the school record on the opening day of the meet.
Stergar notched three top-two individual finishes, posting NCAA 'B' cuts in all of his races. Mulvin anchored the title-winning 800 free relay team that broke the school record. Arslanian notched a trio of top-five individual finishes, posting a NCAA 'B' cut in the 100 butterfly, while Stevenson was among the top eight in all his races and hit the B standard in the 100 breaststroke.
The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with Academic All-League honors in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale) and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits.
