Ryan Sharbaugh

Ryan Sharbaugh enters his third season as an assistant coach on the Cleveland State bench having been named to the position in August 2019.

Sharbaugh joined the Vikings staff after serving as the director of operations for three seasons at Bradley.

Sharbaugh, the team's defensive coordinator, helped coached the team to top four #HLMBB finishes in defensive points per game (2nd, 70.6), defensive field goal percentage (2nd, .423), steals per game (2nd, 6.96) and three-point field goal percentage (4th, .308). Under his leadership, Tre Gomillion was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year, joining Cedric Jackson (2008-09) and Norris Cole (2010-11) as the only Viking to win the league's award.

“Ryan Sharbaugh is one of the hardest-working, well-organized coaches I know,” CSU head coach Dennis Gates said. “He is extremely knowledgeable, resourceful and he is a forward thinker. He is a defensive-minded coach who excels in the areas of game preparation, analytics and player development. He has recruiting ties to the region, and has great relationships at the junior college and international levels.”

During his three seasons on campus at Bradley, Sharbaugh was part of a program that posted two 20-win campaigns with the Braves winning their first Missouri Valley Conference Championship in 31 years during the 2018-19 season.

Sharbaugh joined Bradley after spending two seasons as graduate assistant at Florida State on Leonard Hamilton’s staff. In 2015-16, Sharbaugh helped Florida State to a 20-14 record and the second round of the National Invitation Tournament and had the opportunity to work with FSU NBA Draft pick, Malik Beasely, who was selected 19th overall by the Denver Nuggets.

“My family and I are beyond excited to be joining the Cleveland State University community,” said Sharbaugh. “I have seen firsthand, the lasting impact Coach Gates has on his student-athletes and all those around him. I believe in his vision and I am honored to begin building a championship culture alongside our student-athletes.”

During his time in Tallahassee, Fla., the Seminoles landed a pair of top-10 recruiting classes. In addition to his administrative duties at FSU, Sharbaugh coordinated the Leonard Hamilton Basketball Camps. Prior to Florida State, he spent two years as an assistant coach at Urbana University, where he helped mentor two all-conference performers.

Sharbaugh was an assistant coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College during the 2011-12 school year, helping the Bobcats to NCAA Division II regional semifinal appearance and 22-9 record. He received his start in coaching at the collegiate level during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons as a graduate assistant at California University (Pa.).

A 2008 graduate of Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, Sharbaugh earned master’s degrees from both California University and Florida State.

Sharbaugh and his wife, Marianna, have one son, Sutton.
