Men’s Basketball hits roadblock at Detroit Mercy

DETROIT – The Cleveland State men's basketball program went on a spirited second-half surge, but in the end  the home team was too much as Detroit Mercy was able to defeat the Vikings by a 74-67 margin at Calihan Hall on Friday.

FINAL SCORE: Cleveland State – 67, Detroit – 74 
LOCATION: Calihan Hall – Detroit, Michigan
RECORDS: Cleveland State 19-8 (15-5 Horizon), Detroit 13-13 (10-6 Horizon)

 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- The Vikings had three student-athletes reach double-figures as Tre Gomillion led the column with 12 points scored. Deante Johnson and D'Moi Hodge each added 10 apiece, respectively.

- Broc Finstuen and Torrey Patton both finished with eight points.

- CSU had 10 different student-athletes on the scoring sheet.

- Johnson chipped in a team-high seven rebounds and also tied for the game-high with three blocks.

- Deshon Parker, Patton and Hodge finished tied for the game-best with three steals.

- The Vikes, a squad that has already clinched the No. 1 seed for the Horizon League Championship, will need to win or a Purdue Fort Wayne loss to guarantee sole possession of the regular season title on Saturday.

- Detroit Mercy still has yet to drop at game inside Calihan Hall this season (8-0).

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Detroit Mercy started the game on a 22-6 run over the first nine minutes of the opening half.

- The Vikings then responded with a 25-11 surge of their own to cut the lead to 33-31 with 1:04 left in the first.

- The Titans hit a late three with just six seconds left to take a 39-33 into the locker room at the half.

- CSU hit the first three baskets over the first five minutes of the second to tie the game at 39. The group would take its first lead of the game at 43-42 with 13:53 left in the contest.

- Detroit Mercy then answered with a 12-3 advantage to take a 54-46 edge with 9:16 left.

- Cleveland State continued to battle hard, and got it as close as 66-62 with 2:10 left, but in the end Detroit Mercy was able to hold on for the 74-67 victory.

 

HORIZON LEAGUE TOURNAMENT TICKETS

While the opponent is still not set, the Vikings secured the No. 1 seed and home court advantage for the Horizon League Men's Basketball Championship Quarterfinals, set for March 3 at the Wolstein Center.
