CLEVELAND, Ohio - A pair of Vikings from the Cleveland State University fencing team earned All-Region accolades in a recent announcement by the United States Fencing Coaches Association.
Freshman Lucas Bolton and junior Ahmad Taqi were both named All-Midwest Region Honorable Mention in men's foil.
Taqi and Bolton finished fifth and sixth, respectively, at the NCAA Midwest Regional in early March.
Taqi posted an 8-6 mark in the NCAA Regional pool competition that featured multiple fencers from nationally ranked schools Notre Dame and Ohio State. Bolton registered a record of 7-7 to finish one spot behind his teammate.
In their previous individual postseason competition, Bolton finished as the runner-up at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships. It was the best individual finish by a Viking at the Midwest Championships in program history. Taqi finished in fifth place in the same 63-man field.
Bolton and Taqi were two of only three student-athletes, male or female, that were named All-Midwest Region and did not hail from a Power-Five school.
The All-Region awards, which were newly created this year by the USFCA, are determined based on result and field size at each of the NCAA Regional competitions.
