PJ Farrell

PJ Farrell enters his second year as the Director of Esports at Cleveland State University after the program was announced in May 2022. The Green and White had nine players graduate from the program.

Farrell started eight teams in the inaugural season that included: two in League of Legends, two in Valorant, two in Rocket League, and one in Overwatch and Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. The squads competed primarily in the NECC along with College Valorant (CVal), College League of Legends (CLoL), and the Great Lakes Collegiate Rocket League (GLCRL). In addition, each team also competed in at least one LAN event.

League of Legends Green finished the spring in the final four regionally and nationally in the NECC, as well as fourth in the CLoL Open after placing eighth in the fall. The White team finished in the final four regionally in the fall and eighth in the spring after several players graduated during the semester break.

Overwatch transitioned from a six-player game to a five-player game, but the team still qualified for the playoffs and nationals each semester.

Valorant Green went from not winning a game in the fall to a 6-3 team in the spring while also qualifying for the playoffs. The White team lost only one contest during the regular season and finished second in the Great Lakes Division in the spring.

Rocket League White finished the spring with a 6-3 record and reached the final four in the East Great Lakes Division. The Green team went winless in the fall to an 8-1 mark in the spring, winning the regional championship. The squad went into nationals as the No. 24 seed, defeating the eighth seed for their first-ever national championship.

Smash Brothers had major success, finishing third in regionals for crew battles. For solos, David Arnold and Ruben Lipins went undefeated. Lipins went 18-0 during the regular season, winning the Northeast Region twice and finishing fourth in the NECC.

Prior to Cleveland State, Farrell founded and directed the multi-time national championship-winning program at Holy Name High School in Parma, Ohio. In his four years, Holy Name recorded 15 total playoff appearances. His teams won five national titles in Rainbow 6 to go with top showings in Call of Duty: Cold War (third overall), Rocket League (top-16), Minecraft (top-31), Overwatch (top-32), and Super Smash Brothers Ultimate (top-32).
