MAAC Cancels Spring Sports Season

In response to the immediate and ever-growing concerns regarding the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and its Council of Presidents have unanimously decided to cancel the remainder of its current conference basketball tournaments currently being held in Atlantic City, N.J.

In addition, based upon the MAAC membership's ongoing commitment to the health and safety of our student-athletes and athletic department representatives, and as a result of the growing national concern of the COVID-19 pandemic, the MAAC Council of Presidents has unanimously voted to cancel all spring sports competitions, practices (including captain's practices), effective tomorrow, Friday, March 13 and other athletic related activities for the remainder of the 2020 Spring semester.

The MAAC Council of Presidents regrettably decided to make these challenging decisions to prioritize the health and safety of our student-athletes and out of concern for the broader health and well-being of our various school communities.

"We are in unprecedented and rapidly-evolving situation as the nation and each of our campuses address this epidemic. The Canisius Athletic Department fully supports measures taken by the MAAC Council to protect the health and welfare of our student-athletes, coaches and staff," Director of Athletics Bill Maher said. "I know this is a great disappointment to our student-athletes and coaches, whose hard work and dedication to their sports and Canisius College is appreciated by so many, but this decision was made with best interests of the MAAC, our campuses and broader community in mind."
