Viking Sports Weekly (October 21)

A look at what's happening in Cleveland State Athletics…

Men's Soccer
-Cleveland State (6-4-1, 3-2-0) returns home this Saturday, October 26, to host Wright State (7:00 pm).
-The Vikings picked up a pair of 2-0 wins this past week, topping Duquesne at home and IUPUI on the road.
-Gabriel Pewu scored the game-winner against the Jags and now has a team-leading seven goals this season.

Women's Soccer
-Cleveland State (4-7-3, 2-3-1) will play its final regular season home match on Wednesday, October 23, hosting Detroit Mercy at 7:00 p.m., before traveling to UIC for a 2:00 p.m. EST contest on Sunday, October 27.
-Last time out, the Vikings dropped a 1-0 overtime decision at IUPUI, despite dominating the opening 45 minutes of play with a 9-2 advantage in shots and a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
-So far this season, Elena Gutlove and Grace Krosky are tied for the team lead with three goals each, while Gutlove also has a team-best three assists. Stevie Holbrook has recorded 58 total saves, owning a .795 save percentage.

Volleyball
-The Vikings (5-14, 1-7) will begin a four-match roadswing this weekend, traveling to Green Bay on Friday, October 25 and Milwaukee on Saturday, October 26.
-Last time out, Cleveland State closed out a three-match homestand, dropping a pair of hard fought matches against Youngstown State and Oakland.
-Against YSU, junior Emily DeGeorge recorded her 1,000th career dig, ending the weekend with 1,013 total digs. DeGeorge is the 20th Viking all-time to reach the 1,000-dig milestone. 

Men's Swimming & Diving
-Cleveland State will open dual action this weekend as it hits the road to take on Horizon League foes Milwaukee (Friday, October 25) and Green Bay (Saturday, October 26).
-The Vikings finished in fourth place at the Akron Zips Classic this past weekend with 590.5 points.
-Junior Dominik Niedzialek swept the backstroke events at the meet and won the 200 back at the meet for the second straight season.

Women's Swimming & Diving
-Cleveland State will open dual action this weekend as it hits the road to take on Horizon League foes Milwaukee (Friday, October 25) and Green Bay (Saturday, October 26).
-The Vikings finished in fifth place at the Akron Zips Classic this past weekend with 253 points. 

Fencing
-Cleveland State will host its lone home competitions of the season this weekend.
-The Vikings will host the CSU Duals on Saturday, October 25 where they square off against six opponents.
-CSU will also host the 11th annual John Szent-Kiraly Open Sunday, October 26.

Men's Tennis
-The Vikings will have the week off from competition, returning to action at the Viking Invitational Friday, November 1 through Sunday, November 3.
-Last time out, Cleveland State participated in the ITA Midwest Regional, with Matthew Terry advancing to the Round of 16 in the Main Singles Draw, and the doubles team of Nico Mostardi and Luke Phillips advancing to the Quarterfinals of the Main Doubles Draw.
-Matthew Terry finished the weekend with a team-best 11-2 singles record on the season, and is in sole possession of 10th place on the CSU Singles Wins List with 64 career wins.

Women's Tennis
-Cleveland State will return to action at the Akron Shootout this weekend, participating in the three-day tournament Friday, October 25 through Sunday, October 27. The Akron Shootout will take place in the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion – CSU's home facility.
-This will be the third of four tournaments for the Vikings this fall, as Cleveland State has also competed in the Iberostar College Cup and Viking Invitational.
-Entering the weekend, senior Blanche Lenoan has a team-high three singles wins this fall, while she also has a team-best six doubles victories.

Men's Golf
-Cleveland State closed out its fall campaign last week, finishing second at the Dayton Fall Invitational.
-The Vikings were led by Jules Blakely who captured medalist honors with a birdie on the second playoff hole after shooting rounds of 72-70-73.
-Jack Hanus shot a career-best round of 68 in the final round to finish tied for first and was the runner-up to Blakely in the playoff.

Women's Golf
-The Vikings competed in their final tournament of the fall season last week, placing sixth at the Dayton Flyer Invitational.
-Madison Butler led Cleveland State after finishing tied for 11th, while Rayna Oosterhuis also posted a top-20 individual finish.

Men's & Women's Basketball
-The Cleveland State Athletic Department will hold a Meet & Greet with men's basketball head coach Dennis Gates and women's basketball head coach Chris Kielsmeier on Monday, October 21 at Buffalo Wild Wings Downtown. The event will run from 7:00-8:00 p.m. and is open to all.

Viking Of The Week
Jules Blakely, Men's Golf
The junior won medalist honors at the Dayton Flyer Invitational last time out, posting rounds of 72-70-73 before winning the tournament with a birdie on the second playoff hole. Blakely, who posted his first top-five finish of the season, is the first CSU medalist since the 2017 Horizon League Championships.
