Cleveland State Women's Cross Country

2006 Season Complete

THE STARTING LINE: The Cleveland State women's cross country team finished its season with an eighth place finish at the Horizon League Championships on Saturday (Oct. 28).

CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP: Freshmen Caitlan Ebner placed 36 of 78 runners with a time of 21:00 to lead the Vikings at the league meet. Freshman Colleen Conway was next for the Vikings, placing 42nd overall with a time of 21:23. Junior Christina Swierz clocked a 21:57 (54th place), sophomore Madeline Singer a 22:12 (61st) and sophomore Audrey Piotrowski a 22:39 (66th).

Seniors Sherri Douglas and Shannon Graves rounded out the Viking lineup with times of 23:02 and 23:35, respectively.

CSU finished five points ahead of Detroit (223-228) to claim eighth place in the league standings. Butler (19) won the meet, followed by Loyola (55) and UW-Milwaukee (69).

CLIMBING THE LEAGUE LADDER: The Vikings placed ahead of another team at the league championships for the first time since 1997, when CSU placed seventh of eight teams at the MCC Championships.

EIGHT IS ENOUGH: Caitlan Ebner led the Vikings in each of their eight meets this season. Her season-best 5K time of 20:10 came at the Toledo Invitational on Sept. 9 and her second-best effort (20:27) came Saturday at the Falcon Invitational. Twice this season - at the Tom Evans Invitational on Sept. 9 and again at the Toledo Invitational on Sept. 16 - she has finished two minutes ahead of any other CSU runner.

JAKETIC ON THE VIKINGS: "We finished the season season on a great note. I am very proud of our team and how tough they ran all year despite a lot of injuries."

A LOOK AHEAD: Seven of CSU's nine runners will have eligibility next year. The Vikings lose just two seniors, Sherri Douglas and Shannon Graves.
